From jimmy on the p80 forum
subframe bolts new from Volvo have plastic locking compound on them and are put in at factory dry but into pristine threads.
If the bolt is rusty and the shank has lost diameter due to rust then you are at risk.
If the bolt is healthy then you will not break it. I think the rotating force goes to 150 lb-ft (maybe 200) at the end of the angle. It is 77 lb-ft plus 120 degrees.
Torque only fastener tightening is very unpredictable and lubrication does affect final clamping force.
The torque plus angle will have the first step torque at a value that is dependent on the size of the fastener. The torque sets a minor preload to fastener and the angle goes to a predictable elongation for the fastener that sets it clamping load very predictably.
I use a cheap penetrating oil spray in the hole and then blow it out so it is very lightly lubed and clean before I install the fastener. The effects of oil are slight once the load on threads is high unless you are using some special molybdenum or other metal enhanced lubricant that tolerates the extreme pressure.
The other consideration here is that dry corroded threads makes a fastener hard to turn which makes the clamp load low for torque only fasteners and makes torque plus angle fasteners very hard to turn to get the angle. When you are turning the fastener and it chatters (bind and release cycles) that twist as bind occurs is very stressful on the bolt and is often when they break.

Good info, Sir!

So a light coating of PB, rather than painted on anti-seize?

Do not use the PB as the anti-seize being liquid initially will act as a lubricant. Any oil will cause the anti-seize not to set up against the threads in the sub-frame.

Switched the relays for the BCM on my CEM as per xemodex flow chart. Trying to troubleshoot my failed brake control module. The new relays didn’t help. 2002 v70xc and I was able to change both relays with the CEM in place. I wiggled my hand up under the dash and one at a time switched them out. Next step will be to check the harness connector for corrosion. Last will be to take the BCM out and send it off, probably to module masters. The whole time I’ve owned the car, three years, the ABS/traction/check engine/brake lights have been on with the stop brake warning and the yellow triangle..

Why do you think it has these issues? A lot of miles and previous owner neglect? Moisture problems in the northwest? Just curious why electrical problems pop up.

PON - previous owner neglect for sure. She said it’d be $1200 to fix so she ignored it.

How are those tires on city streets? They would be rough on our “ developing nation “ roads.

Highway would be cool.

The Netherlands invest a lot in infrastructure, so road quality is typically good/very good. I've been to the USA a couple of times, highways are fine though :)

They are wrapped in 225-35-19 Fulda Sportcontrol tyres, which I never had. So far so good, only tested them in the dry for now. Not too much road noise, which add to comfort levels

Nice backdrop on photo 1!!
Interesting, I always assumed your S80 was T6.
Very nicely done S80! I always enjoy your infrequent posts.

Edit: 282K XC70 Engine oil/filter/ATF/BG change, tire rotation. Today the "Dirty Volvo", as our 4 year old daughter calls it, got a gift from a parted out S60R - exhaust :D
I opted to remove the potential for rain squeal permanently.

These sound so great with an R exhaust & resonator removed/replaced with 2.5" pipe!

I really can't convey my appreciativeness for tools like this in the photo below.

We should start a thread dedicated just to tools/products that we've found invaluable for working in the garage.

The first time you dump a gallon into one of these you will instantly wish you had spent the money tens of dozens of gallons ago.
