Took me a minute. Sometimes I field some pretty kooky users/registrations/posts... often by users who are posting on a forum for the first time (I think. Gotta be, some of these.).
Yup, he's the current owner of this car!

I've seen some crazy posts on here too, that goes for a lot of forums. I love the ones that are totally random... like a post on Volvospeed about a problem with the guy's Dodge Ram  .
scot850 wrote: 17 Jan 2020, 13:28 What TCV are you using? If stock it is not up to above 12 psi boost even when new.

Neil.
It's the original Pierburg TCV. It's probably in need of replacement.
matthew1 wrote: 17 Jan 2020, 13:41 My 850 boosted well beyond 12psi as measured by a new iPD gauge with a stock TCV. 17-18. I don't recall ever changing it anyway... my memory of my 850 upgrades isn't perfect. I don't see anything in my email which goes back to 2004 with "tcv volvo" so I'm 98% sure I never upgraded it.
That's the thing, for the longest time with this car, I never had any problems with the TCV. Or any other P80 I had early on, but now it seems TCVs are dying left and right. Which is funny, some people say they never have problems with them, and others do. I probably have 5 or 6 on the shelf, and they're all over the place. I had one that overboosted like crazy, and one that capped the boost on my V70R at around 6 PSI. That one was the gray Pierburg Porsche one that is a common "upgrade". That was not my experience with it!
Ordered a new OEM Pierburg from FCP and boost has been stable and where it should be on my R.

My old 98 V70 XC would probably leave a 18T and definitely a 19T at a set of traffic lights by the time the turbos spool up! It would of course lose out at the higher end.

Yes, the 2.3 is considered HPT and the 2.4 is LPT. 2.3 comes with either a 15g or 16t depending on the year, and the 2.4 comes with a 13g/13t.

My V70R is SLOW off the line, but that's also due to the weight in that car... the AWD P80s aren't light cars! This '98 was quick off the line when I had my manual boost controller hooked up... it's a lot of fun at 9 PSI on a 13g when you're driving around town!

A LPT is better for city driving and fuel economy, it has more spunk around town.
HPT is the hot rod turbo, it not as spunky in normal driving but it roars, impresses or scare the dickens chickens when you floor it.

If you want better daily drivability and fuel economy ... LPT.
If you impress somebody that is into performance or scare the dickens out of somebody that is not ... HPT.

If you want the best of both worlds, Twin Sequential Turbochargers, one LPT and one HPT. Produces boot over a wider RPM range.

Or you stay safe with a non-turbo base model with the 5 speed auto. My buddy (who bought my old 00 MY base SE V70) dropped by today and still loves that old car. He did a long trip out East from Calgary with a tail wind and got 7 litres/100km on a 400km and on the way to where he was going and 7.6 litres/100km on the way back into a strong head wind. That is seriously good mileage for a car with close to 200,000 miles on it now and burns no oil. Much as folk malign the 5 speed auto it is peppy in the mid range around town and and on the highway.

(That is 31-33.5 miles/gallon US)
