Replacing parts

I need to replace the propeller shaft, viscous coupler, right hand front stabilizer link and left hand front CV axle what do I need to replace them? And where could I find the part reasonably priced?

Volvo are extremely un-helpful as they changed the first 2 years (97 850 AWD which I believe was Canada only in North America) and 98 V/S70 AWD and R all used the same prop-shafts. 99 and 00 each also had different versions. The V70XC also used the same ones in the same years. The problem occurs as they were not phased in at the same time.

The main way to tell what you have is by the diameter of the front flange that attaches to the Angle Gear. This diameter determines what version you need.

When looking for a prop-shaft very carefully check the front UJ for movement/clunking as heat from the cat tends to melt them eventually. Also check the center support bearing. If you cannot find a good one you may have to get Colorado Driveshaft to re-build one for you at around $400 or so.

One other thing to check on the prop-shaft is the earlier ones had a 'flat' flange face, but the later ones have a cupped version.

Similarly a 98 VC has different front flanges. Check they have been stored on their end or there is a danger of then self distructing when first used as the silicon fluid runs away from the clutches.

The link rod I will suggest buy new from the likes of FCP Euro, IPd or the like. I would look at either OE Volvo or Lemforder/TRW for the part. Used ones are not worth wasting time with.

What is wrong with your drive axle? If it is just the CV boots that are broken, and it is the original and otherwise not damaged, replacing the CV boots with new GKN versions is often the best way to do it as aftermarket axles are mostly junk. 98 Axles are different to later R axles as they attach using a large nut on their ends as the hub. Later ones use a long bolt through the hub. I believe yo may be able to change to 99 ones but you would have to change the hubs as well.

As to were to buy as you are on the western side I would try Vandsautodismantlers in Sacramento area (I have heard they can be a little 'course' to deal with) or even as far north as Chapman Motors on Vancouver Island in Canada. Chapmans are a bit pricey, but yu have the advantage of US$ v's CDN$.

Another good place to try is Erie Vo-Vo in NYC. They warrant their used parts.
