93 850 GLT Bad Gas Mil.. in /Sub-Zero Conditions

Post by Hot Pepper Thai »

This is my second post and thanks for all the comments on the s70. My 93 850 is a work horse. It my Winter ride and recently it been getting bad mileage in Sub-Zero conditions. I've add the Lucas Gas Treatments and what a beautiful product. Like it say on the bottle that it will pay for itself and I will recommend this product. But in single digit temp lately its hasn't seem like it improve anything. Question is, what could cause a drop in the mileage? New plugs and tune-up. If someone can help me let me know. Thanks!

My S70 gets the worst mileage of the year during the coldest days of winter...it might just be the way things are, but if you are really suffering, I would first read your codes. Even if a check engine light isn't on, it might have a code or two stored. I'm thinking worst case is an 02 sensor going bad but that should show a code, so go there first.

I thought the same, however this happens ever 4th fill up's I don't get it. I've try running the tank out and hoping it will return to normal. I've got a 93 GLT and I thought I had a OBD-I but I took it to a European shop and base on their findings the OBD-I doesn't exist. Now what? The on board computer is a joke doesn't give me codes (Check Eng) and Just bought an Equus 3110 from Amazon( in which Matt Recommended and what great company to do bus with) and thought it was a great tool to have. So please if their any suggestion I'm all ear's. Thanks MIJ! and all others

Ps. Any feed on the Equus 3110 of such?

The air box. There is a thermostat in there that diverts warm air from the exaust to the intake in really cold conditions. Maybe something in there has either plugged up or isn't working as it should. Have a look here: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/chat/p ... sc&start=0

Yeah, a '93 won't have the port for OBD connection. However, the diagnostic boxes under the hood are actually pretty good. However, not all information is accessible, especially for your current issue. I don't recall if you said it or not, but I'm assuming you changed your fuel filter, right? It could be just that you're getting intermittently bad gas. I would make sure to buy gas at the same place each time and don't buy a no-name gas brand, AND, never fill up if you see a gas truck parked at the station. My understanding is that the process of filling up the below ground tanks stirs up a lot of junk. Anyway, these cars are finicky so it could be a number of issues and we might not even be on the right track here.

As far as the Equus code reader, if you don't need it, offer it up in the for sale section. I'll bet that someone will grab it pretty quickly.

I was told that the problem could be in the air box itself. I just had no time to clearly inspect it. I think your on the right track with the bad gas scenario and I watch for tanker refill closely. I really appreciate your quick comments and great advise. Thanks again MIJ and Lewismug!
