Any suggestions on what and how to clean it while the car is up on jack stands waiting for brakes and oil cooler lines?

Been in Wisconsin in its whole life and everything is pretty much fused together under there. Lol.

Fuel filter swapped recently, or is it a bundle of rust flakes?

For that matter and speaking things near the fuel filter, if you're feeling ambitious you could refresh the lines to the EVAP system, they are shot on most P80 cars. Rollover valve, EVAP canister etc, I couldn't tell you without some searching for schematics. Looks like a good time to do it while it's up on stands.

Might want to put some wood or tires under there to keep it up in the air, if you're spending time underneath.

Good call on the tires! I'll do that!

Fuel filter probably needs to go. Lol. Can you tell me where its located? No idea about the EVAP system though. Lol.

Thank you for the tips!

It's a good thing you asked where the fuel filter is because I just assumed your AWD was the same as FWD models but it isn't. Check this one out: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=51096

EVAP system I am too lazy to look up right now! But maybe someone else will :)

Be careful when working on the back of the car. AWD parts for many things back there and now NA. The filter is mounted to a bracket above the rear axle on the passenger (RHS) of center. The 98 is different to the 99-00 emissions system. Even the screw for the clamp is no longer available and if original is a rusty Torx item. Soak it in PB blaster or Deep Creep (not WD40) and keep repeating that for a couple of days if you want any chance of un-doing it. I might of been able to help you with parts but I don't have parts for a 98.

Fuel lines are also NA as are many of the EVAP pipes. Volvo parts drawings are also hard to read for this area of the car so access to Vida would be helpful. Some on line dealers may have parts drawings you can access.

Much of the EVAP system is mounted on the bracket for the fuel filter and are hard to reach. Several are on top of the fuel tank and rear-subframe and can only easily be accessed by dropping the rear sub-frame. Not something I recommend unless you are a masochist (ask me how I know!!). Although not identical, a few years ago I replaced the cracked rear subframe on my 2000 'R' and I documented the whole process. It is not identical to your car, bt with access to parts drawings and the pictures on my posting you may be able to figure out where all the stuff is on your car.

I wish you luck!

Neil.

Man, you guys are great! Not that mechanically inclined, nor do I have all the tools, but I'll definitely look into all of that while the car is up in the air for the next handful of days.

Because the poster used part numbers in his title, took 5 seconds to find - I love people who do that...
