B230FT Identification

How do I identify the motor in my car? It is 88 Volvo 765 tic. The number on the timing cover is:

1289161 K
B230FT Nr. 2155
The build date is: 3-88
I read somewhere that the K Motor was started mid-88.
Is 3-88 considered mid-88?
Or does my car have a 89 motor. From the pictures I found it has Mitsubishi TDO5 Turbo.

I don't think the K after the engine number denotes a K engine. In fact the B230K first appeared in 1985 and did not have a turbo. I can't find any reference to it being fitted in the US cars.

Your engine designation is the B230FT. If you check the VIN plate it should read YV1, A (or X), 87, 5, Check figure, J.

YV1 is Volvo
A is air bags, X 3 point seat belts
87 is engine B230F
5 is number of doors
Check figure is worked out from other data
J is the year model code = 88.

If it has a Mitsubishi turbo then it has probably been fitted later as they were originally fitted with the Garrett T3 tic. This was a large intercooled turbo which suffered from turbo lag.

Model years usually run from late September or early October so a March build is about halfway through the model year.

I checked today and I found a K on the block under the intake and it has 357 injectors. My VIN is: YV1GA8751J0020054.
It is 88 VOLVO 760 5 door Estate.
The reason I say the turbo is mitsubishi is because I printed out pictures of TDO5 and TDO4. It says that TDO5 is used 87-89 and TDO4 is used in 90. Mine matched the picture of the TDO5 it has a long CBV on top and a waste gate actuator on bottom. The TDO4 has the short CBV.
