Got the wife an 850 (a car Ive always wanted btw) and its a great car.
Its a 95 (nonGLT) 2.4 auto w/ econo mode.
Has 70k with a new starter installed 5k miles ago.
The problem:
Starts and runs fine, great realy but every so often it wont start. It acts like theres no starter in it. Ive looked at the ignition switch and the starter wires and all is fine. This leads me to believe its the cam sensor acting up.
The usual shift override button trick does not work for this problem. When it has this fit....you let it sit a few minutes and it will start like nothing happened. Its not a big issue as much as it is an annoyance (hence I have to listen to the lil woman complain about it).
Any other ideas?
Im an old school small schevy guy so this ECU/ECM controlled stuff gives me fits.

From this I take it that this is a no crank condition as opposed to a crank/no start condition. It acts like theres no starter in it.
The cam sensor would be a possibility with a crank/no start condition but not a no crank condition.
I'll let the guys with more experience with automatic cars comment on the shift override.

I'm confused...why is the shift over-ride button entering the picture here? Are you having to use it for some reason? My suspicion is either a bad ground or the starter is a rebuilt one that has a hot spot on it. If the ground is an issue, you'll get some strange dash light issues when this problem occurs. Is that the case? You didn't say, so maybe not. Let us know if the starter is actually a new one or a rebuild from somewhere.

I forgot to mention,
The upshift light flashes only when this happens. It will continue to flash until the car is shut off. If it starts right up the next time, theres no flash. If it sits for a few minutes after the initial attempt, it will start.
Sorry about not mentioning this. Brain fart

There are only two types of car owners - those who own Volvos and those who wish they did.
The starter was supposed to be brand new....Cost $130USD. may be taking it back before this is over.
Edited typo.... was $130 at Advance Auto.

Instead of cleaning the switch, Im just getting a new 1. Less to deal with later.
The pleasures of owning this jem far outweigh the pains though.
Thanks for the replies....even though the problem is'nt solved yet, I do value the time you all have taken to help this Volvo noob out.

Was going to work on it today but ended up cleaning the yard up. Tornadoes really tore Tn up. I feel fortunate that all I got out of it was a messy yard and a tipped over shed. Others werent so lucky.
Im sure you all pointed me in the right direction and the information here is PRICELESS. Thank you all again.

I've thought of all the synonyms I know and this one has me tossed.
What does it mean?
