1998 V70 timing belt trouble...Help!

Post by anbran »

Having a heck of a time putting the new TB on. I can't imagine how you guys get the TB around the crank pulley and up to the crank sprocket?!?!

There has got to be an easier way or I am doing it all wrong...

I know that removing the pulley would be lovely...but that requires a puller they say and a major battle getting the big nut on and off.

Any suggestions?

Actually, assuming that the old belt is still in place, it isn't that tough to remove the pulley. Remove the 4 bolts rather than the big crank bolt. If you have already removed the old timing belt be very careful not to turn the crankshaft in the process. With a socket wrench that will be tricky, if you have an impact wrench just hold on to the pulley and zip the bolts out.

I was able to sneak mine around the back by twisting it sideways and pushing it through.

Are you saying that the big nut does not have to come off?? Its ONLY the four bolts that hold it on??

That is all that holds the biggest obstacle to the belt on, the pulley.

Be careful not to move the crank.

I agree about not moving the crank...be careful with that.
When I did mine, this little tool from IPD was most helpful

The 30mm center nut does have to come off. If you're not going to remove the pulley, cut the old belt off and snake the new one back in. The new one will go in a lot easier than trying to take the old one out.

I've been trying to snake the belt on, but its really difficult.

It seems there is two schools of thought on the 30mm nut and the four bolts...

Anyone confirm either way??

The 4 bolts and the 30mm nut have to come off to remove the pulley. I just did the timing belt on my 98 S70 on Monday and I removed the pulley. I have air tools so removing the 30mm nut was no problem. The pulley comes right off with very little force. I used a small 2 jaw puller that was so small it just fit around the edge of the pulley and it came right off with little effort.

If your having an issue loosening the 30mm nut you can have someone climb under the car and on the back side of the engine there's a gap where the flywheel ring gear is visible. Have someone hold a large screwdriver into the teeth on the flywheel and against the engine block while you loosen the 30mm nut. That will keep the crank from spinning backwards when you loosen the nut.

I have just spend the last 2 days changing out my timing belt (V70R). I had the same probs (hence the 2 days bit  ) anyway after cooling down and a beer I took a good look at the new belt (Conti) and it seemed just a fraction thinner than the old belt. The old one was coming off no matter what, so why was I wasting most of my day trying to ease it past the pulley ?. so I just cut the thing off. The new belt, slipped up between the pulley and the sensor alot easier that the old one was coming off (the thing thats stopping you!) and "viola" it was on!. It's still a tight fit, but it does ease up there.

I then spent the rest of the day assembling, I'd also got a new serpentine belt, it was a different length and I thought I'd got the wrong thing, turns out there is a new routing pattern for this and the new belt fit just fine when i followed that. You might be doing this too so see if this works for the engine you've got?

Forgot this serpentine belt image  ok, tried this image shack thing, man this is painful. I've no idea how to get my image displayed  so sorry guys I'm giving up, I found my image on the internet if you search for the routing of serpentine belts hopefully you'll find it too ?
