Timing procedure write up

Post by Nathan79 »

Hello,
07 xc70, 2.5L turbo, dual vvt cams... Looking for a timing procedure write-up with instructions that include unknown cam & pulley positions. As of now Pulleys are off cams & crank is not set "on mark".

Thank you,
Nathan

Cylinder head, cams & pulleys are currently disassembled, and we're not marked before disassembly). My biggest question right now is how to set cams on cylinder head before cam cover & cam locking tool get applied. There are #'s stamped on back of cams where notches are... Should the numbers be on top or bottom when setting cams? Or will it be obvious when putting cams on cylinder head (as in, they only set in place when placed a certain way)?

Thanks
Nathan

Once you get the crankshaft on the clearance mark you can put the cams in , in any position.

The clearance mark means no pistons are at the top of the cylinders and clear all the valves.

Does that help understanding?

Installing the variable valve timing unit on the camshaft

Note! Oil the center screw before installation.
Camshaft alignment tool installed on rear of camshafts.

Push on the variable valve timing unit/timing gear pulley on the camshaft.
Install the center screw (1) which secures the variable valve timing unit to the camshaft. Tighten slightly.
Slacken off, but do not remove the screws (2) which secure the timing gear pulley to the variable valve timing unit.
Turn the timing gear pulley until the screws at the oval holes are in the center position. Tighten the screws (2) slightly.

Turn the variable valve timing unit clockwise to its limit position so that the unit is in its end position.

Position the upper timing cover

Undo the center screw and continue turning clockwise until the timing gear pulley marking aligns with the marking on the upper timing cover.

Tighten the center screw (1) in the variable valve timing unit to 120 Nm. Center plug 35 Nm.

Installing the timing belt

Note! Variable valve timing units do not have return springs and are easily thrown out of position when the camshaft belt is installed.

Check that the markings align.
Install the belt in the following order:
  • the idler pulley
    intake cam
    exhaust cam
    water pump
    tension pulley.
Tensioning of cambelt

This adjustment is to be made with a cold engine.
A suitable temperature is approximately 20 °C/68 °F.
At a higher temperature, for example with a warm engine or a higher ambient temperature, the needle is further to the right.
The illustration shows the position of the indicator when aligning the timing belt tensioner at approximately 20 °C/68 °F.

Note! There are two different tensioners depending on model year.

Fix the belt tensioner center screw in position and turn the belt tensioner eccentric clockwise until the tensioner indicator passes the marked position and reaches the end position. Then turn the eccentric back so the indicator reaches the marked position illustrated. Tighten the center screw. See Tightening torque:Summary of specific components and tightening torques .
Check that the indicator is in the correct position.

Tightening
Hold the center plug at 25 Nm at the same time tighten the 3 x (2) screws on the camshaft timing gear pulley to 10 Nm.

Final check

Remove:
999 5452 from the rear of the camshafts
Install new plugs with new sealing washers. Tighten.
Checking the markings and belt tension.
Position the upper timing cover.
Turn the crankshaft 2 rotations. Check that the markings on the crankshaft and timing gear pulleys correspond.
Remove the upper timing cover.

If i understand this correctl
1. the VVt sprockets were removed without a locking tool?
2. a locking tool was used but didnt alight any timing marks?
3 a locking tool was used and timings aligned but variable rotation was not marked?

VVT sprocket

In worst case what i would do in this your situation is set the crank to its mark, then install your cam locking tool, mathmatically there are only 4 or 6? possible combinations then install the VVt sprockets as per directions. Turn the engine by hand very slowly, any interference turning by hand will not damage anything, damage only occurs when the engine is running. Keep trying until the engine rotates by hand, then start it. Good luck

Ok all... I am going to attempt this today & see how it goes. The only real question I have in my mind now is how to position cams before lockdown tool gets installed, & timing is set. I spoze the lockdown tool really only fits one way..... Are the part numbers on back of the cams an indicator... Like being right side up or upside down?

Thanks
Nathan
