The size is probably a plus since I'm in the Boston area and my S70 is longer than alot of the small SUVs in the area.

I'm mostly interested in getting a sense of how much of a can of worms these engines could be, guess I'll have to go check out the s40/v50 forums.

Edit: for some reason i thought it was a 4cyl, didn't realize it's also a 5cyl. Having done the headgasket on my own s70 i'm not too deterred, but he says it will crank but not start. His mechanic didn't give him too much info other than to try a cam cover and headgasket and see if it works. I'm assuming the cam seal could be pcv pressure, causing over heating and headgasket failure, but i'm not advanced enough to know off the top of my head why that would make it not start.

It is a second generation P1 (Subcompact executive car ). Bigger the first generation X40 platform (Compact executive car).

You don't need to remove the front motor mount on the S40 P1 to change the timing belt like you do with the S40 X40. You have more room to get your hands down where the timing belt is. I had to take a ton of stuff off my X40 just to install the camshaft alignment tool.

Yeah, that 142 is really cool. It would make an awesome project!

P1 S40s are 5 cylinder, the "RNC" version. Slightly updated RN designed for the "compact" segment, being the P1 platform cars. Overall, pretty similar to the RN, but some small differences with things like the oil cooler, oil filter location, and various designs of other ancillary parts.
I don't know that a head gasket failure would totally prevent the car from starting though. After reading through the ad real quick, he mentions a cam seal blowing out on the highway... that's not a good sign. Makes me wonder if it was driven until it blew up. Then again, it still cranks, so that's a good sign. Compression test would probably be my first step after making sure there's actually oil in the engine.
Sounds like the mechanic he took it to doesn't know what he's doing.

It looks nice a nice car otherwise, though. I really like red P1s.

Oooh, a cheap V70R! For around $2,800 that could be a good buy assuming there aren't any other problems aside from the cosmetic condition.
