where is the external amplifier?!?

Post by kilgoretrout »

i have a 96' 850 turbo and I'm doing some stereo work. I have been told that there is an external amplifier that volvo puts in these cars. I have ripped apart my car and scoured this site but I cannot seen to locate this cursed thing. I would be enormously greatful if someone could clue me in on where it is.

thanks.........ryan

I think that what your talking about is an antenna amplifier. All 850 wagons have the antenna in the drivers side rear glass. A board(amplifier) is what the radio antenna wire plugs into, then out of the board to the antenna in the glass. It receives 12 volt power when the car is on and helps receive the signal.

To access it you must dig into the side carpet in the rear of the wagon, not too big of a job.

some 850's used an external amplifier for the stereo. Most, however, did not. The easy way to tell is check the back of your radio. All units have an "AMP" plug... but is something plugged into yours? If it's not plugged in, then you have no amp. If something's plugged in, you have an amp. Depending on how they assembled yours, it could be behind the radio on the floor (a pain to get to) or by the heater core.
