Power Antenna 88 Volvo 765 tic 206K miles

Post by lummert »

I need to replace the power antenna on my 88 765 tic. The power unit is still in the car. The mast has been replaced with a universal antenna with no mast.
The radio has been replaced with a Kenwood cassette receiver. I can only receive local stations. Will the power antenna from any 745 SW, 765 SW, 945 SW, or 965 SW fit without wiring hassles? I can't tell if the power unit works because the wire to power the antenna is not hooked to the radio. I have tried the up/down switch but I can't hear any noise from the antenna power unit. I will need to locate the wire to the radio and hook it up and see if the power unit works.

Any help with tis would be greatly appreciated :?:

The part number for the antenna for the '88 765 is 1384789. This number is also listed for the '89 and '90 models of both 740 and 760.

The part numbers for the 940/960 are different although the picture on VADIS looks the same. Thers is no listing for any of the vehicles prior to '88.

However, the antenna rod is listed as a separate item for your vehicle.

The 'up/down' switch is actually a cut out switch. In the "on" position the antenna goes up when the radio is switched on. In the "off" position the radio can be switched on to play a cassette without the aerial going up. The only way to test the motor is by connecting 12 volts to it.

The original radio would have a red wire to the antenna switch. From the switch to the motor the wire should be red/black. Also to the motor should be a green/red wire from fuse #29. Just to confuse things, as Volvo is wont to do, the wire at the fuse box is green/black, changing part way along the car to green/red.

Thanks for the reply. I find listings online for antenna masts, but that will only work if it includes the mount and hardware. I have found a listing for a used power antenna from a 89 Volvo 745 for $35. I don't know how much for shipping as I haven't contacted them yet.

I have ordered my used power antenna today. While I was in my car today I pulled the radio out and I found a very small gauge red wire that is not attached to anything and wrapped with tape. There was another small gauge wire (don't remember what color) that might be the radio light.

Would Volvo use such a small gauge wire for this?

Your reply would be greatly appreciated. :?:

On some applications a thin wire is used. For the power antenna the red wire is 1.5mm2 and I should think the lighting wire would be the same.

If you take a good look behind the dash you will find other wires of the same spec.

Thanks for the reply billofdurham.

I was looking at the radio that I am going to use: BLAUPUNKT Daytona CR42. The wiring on it is small gauge also.
