I agree that grammar and spelling are important on a forum because text is the only medium of communication we have. It bugs me too when users use poor spelling, all caps, etc.

However, not all of us are English majors, and we're going to suffer a bit. I ask all of us, especially you JRL, to "move on", or ask the mis-speller

I don't know if there's a spell check here or not, if there is why don't you make it easily accessable?
ALL the forums lately, not just here, have had a rash of absolutely
atrocious spelling and grammar mistakes, that would help!

Jim,
The latest browser versions have spell check built in such as this version of Firefox which I'm using. It's just a matter of enabling it in its options. In regards to spell check with this forum's software, if it has it, I haven't been able to find it.

Over the years I have found that some teachers do not know the basic rules of grammar, nor do they have much idea about spelling. If it looks right then it is! This has become more evident to me since my grand-daughter started her secondary education. The teachers, most of whom look too young to be in that position, have not been taught the rudiments and are, therefore, unable to teach them. Fortunately, my daughter was properly educated and is able to keep things on an even keel.

One of the major factors in this rash of poor grammar, spelling and punctuation is the proliferation of text messaging. Everything has to be abbreviated and this is carried over to everyday writing, such as posts on forums. Unfortunately, for dinosaurs like me, most of the abbreviations are meaningless. If I find obscure abbreviations in a post I pass over it. Why should I have to work out what problem is being presented and then work out a solution?

This abuse of the English language can only become worse as more people take up the 'easy' option and more teachers do not learn the basics of what was a beautiful language.

On the question of the spell checker I can't find one here but I did see, earlier this evening, that the UK Volvo Owners Club Forum does have one. Judging by some of the bad spelling on that forum some of the members do not use it.

After reading all the well thought out and delightful posts on the plight of grammar and spelling I thought that I would add this to piece to further add validity to the failure of the education system in general.

This is a shot of my car.

I apologize for the foul language, but I do see the humor in it.
Teenagers who where not invited to the house where refused entry by my son, This was the result!! I am thankful that nobody got hurt, except my wagon.

Clearly the education system is failing, the last time I looked there was a

Fellow posters, I do believe you may enjoy this:

or shortcutting right to the point -

But remember these two things as we lament the degradation of words and writing:

Our grammer is quite different than our founding fathers
&
Change is the only constant.

(I misspelled it on purpose... I had to ignore the red dots to do it too)
