Re: Cam cover removal
Hey guys, quick question. I had to take of a plastic piece that was bolted to the lock end of my VVT cam. In the midst of taking it off, a little piece of it broke off. What is this piece used for?

Also, do I need an impact to take off the harmonic balancer? I don't have access to one and I'm not the biggest fan of using power tools on an engine.

Can you post a picture of it? Not sure I recall any plastic pieces on the end of my VVT cam, just the metal camshaft position sensor and aperture.Cupojoe710 wrote: ↑20 Sep 2018, 11:20 Hey guys, quick question. I’ve always used an impact to remove and replace the harmonic balancer, but if you have a tool that can act as a counterhold, you can use that and a 30mm socket. There’s one commonly sold that’s sort of a wrench that attaches to the bolts around the HB.Cupojoe710 wrote: ↑20 Sep 2018, 11:39 Also, do I need an impact to take off the harmonic balancer? You can also lock the flywheel by dropping a 3/8 extension into the hole.
I would use an impact though.
The plastic piece on the rear end of the engine (left hand side of car) is a cam seal plug which self-immolates on removal. Order up a new one and replace.

Yeah, that’s the aperture for the camshaft position sensor. The sensor itself is mounted off to the side and reads the position of the camshaft using the gaps in the aperture as the camshaft spins. So if that’s broken then you’re going to have some issues.Cupojoe710 wrote: ↑21 Sep 2018, 15:24 This would be the piece that came off the VVT cam, it's metal not plastic lol

Cam covers are matched to cylinder head to get a precision cam bearing fit and oil pressure clearance
You need an entire new cylinder head and cam cover
Not too expensive
