Key & Programming Cost

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Key & Programming Cost

Post by MoVolvos »

$80 for cut key and $36 for programming from Volvo?

If done together with a remote it's another $64 Labor and $36 for programming.

Is that considered a good price?

"good" is of course relative. It seems nuts that it is this expensive but it is.

The parts guy showed some frustration as they don't cut keys and are ordered from Volvo pre-cut through VIN. As for programing he said we just plug things in and Volvo is in control.

Is that from the dealer or a locksmith? Does your 03 have the awful switchblade ke like my 04, or the traditional Volvo key with the remote as a fob like my 02 had? I dislike the 04 switchblade keys. The dealer said they could not make me a key, and fob like the 02. Both switchblade pop out keys have been broken for years, but both keys still have working keyless buttons. I didn't like folding the key in so left them out and consequently one is stuck out, and the other flops around. For the price you are quoted, I would replace both of mine. My understanding was Volvo wants $400 each complete! June

My remote and key are separate. The dealer I think quoted $268 for the remote, $80 labor and $36 for software. The above cost is if I supplied the remote. Shouldn't you be able to transfer the chip and key into a new case with yours?

There are some YouTube videos with using a aftermarket replacement case which requires the key to be cut out of the original. Looks like it won't last and the buttons have to be programmed.

I sure wish I could have the key with separate fob. My dealer is adamant the old style like yours won't work with my car. I misplaced the Valet key in the move to Jacksonville. It still required me to carry the other for the buttons... the strange part is both remotes work fine. I never thought they would last so long! Thanks June

One local locksmith quoted about $120 for a key and programing. Perhaps a local locksmith in your area can confirm if it can be done? Try Volvo again and insist on a single key and see if they're willing to try it.

I only have 1 key and 1 remote and I was quoted 290 Euros (Not counting labor cost) for a new key and a new remote...
I should be able to get a cheaper key from a random locksmith, and just get the remote from right? (100 euros) cheaper at least without the key from Volvo..

Is it possible to buy a remote online and have Volvo program it? Should be cheaper right?

Not paying 3-400 euros for a car worth 2k euros to get a spare remote...

Went to test drive an 04 S60R AWD today and it was a switch blade key in the Remote. I am assuming from 04 on Volvo went with the single unit to keep up with consumer demand for something more modern and one instead of two items on a key chain.
