2006 Rear bumper cover removal

I am about to remove the rear bumper cover on my son's 06 XC70. One of the sensors is coded as failed.

I have read the Vida instructions, and only one of the instructions I can't figure is where the rivets that have to be removed are? Only ones I can see are the ones holding the silver cover plate to the main cover.

Can anyone point out where they are and how many?

Lastly, any other advice or tricks I should know about to remove the rear bumper cover and fixing the back up sensor.

I haven't done a rear on an XC, but it sounds not too bad according to THIS.

I know there are some rivets in the fender arch/mud-flap vicinity that may need to be drilled. I need to take the rear bumper skin off one of our non-XC's soon so I'll be re-reading the link above.

Pretty sure same as P80s. Three or four along the inner perimeter of the rear wheel arch, but I haven't actually do it so. . . Grains of salt recommended.

Hey Niel,
I had form 36 pulled up last night out of curiosity. I think there are only 2 rivets that need to be drilled out. They appear to be on the underside of the rear valence, just rear of the rear tires/fender arch's. If you have the factory mudflaps, there will be more. These can be kind of a pain as they like to spin as your bit gets close to finishing its job. Volvo uses strange rivets on these, you can get replacements from IPD/FCP. I just used 1/4" X 1/2" aluminum rivets & a HD rivet gun as the nail on 1/4" rivets is too large for a standard rivet gun.

Thanks guys. Appreciate the info. I have done the front one. It is a bit of a pain and the hardest part is Volvo has to use small T20 Torx screws on the inner fenders that work on the plastic sliders holding the rear edges in place. Of course these are in the fenders and after 15 years or so of winter salt they become impossible to undo. I ended up having to grind the heads off and then remove the threaded slider screw remains and replace with new. Why they could not just use a regular bolt!!

Otherwise it is a 2 person job to remove the cover ideally. With the rear, it doesn't seem to bad, it was just that the rivets were not obvious. Access to the car is challenging as my son uses it and I no longer have a big 3 car garage. Here it is currently snowing!!

Hoping to get to this next week when the new fender locking screws get to the dealer for me. Had planned to swap the winter tires off at the same time. Hm....!

The rivet removal can be a little challenging, but I have had plenty of experience on P80 fender liner removals and mudflap repairs under my belt, but appreciate the heads up anyway.

I'll try to remember to take pictures as I go along for future reference.

Well I need help and possibly much therapy. My son and I foolishly decided to remove the rear bumper on the XC70 to fix the back up sensors. Naturally from the instructions on Vida, easy-peasy. Wrong. As usual, as I find for the newer vehicles they are poor at best and on par with Haynes manuals. It misses on some simple items like, how to remove the cables for the sensors to allow you to remove the rear bumper. It also give you the impression when you remove the rear bumper that it is just the cover that comes off as the repair instructions for the rear parking sensors shows the harness and bumper stiffener attached to the car. It is not, if you remove the rear bumper it all comes off as one piece.

The first steps went better than hoped. Car up on axle stands and rear wheels off. Battery removed to allow access to 2 bumper bolts on LH end.

First though we managed to loosen the 2 x T25 screws (one either end of the bumper on the rear of the inner fender). Surprising they came loose after soaking for a while with PB Blaster and then tapping with a T25 bit, they both came loose. Amazing! That was the worst for sure............Eh, No!!

The 2 standard Volvo rivets came out after drilling and wedging them to stop them rotating.

Removed the 4 hidden long 'nuts' (13mm nuts with a long shaft attached to them) hidden under the rear lip of the spare wheel well.

Managed to loosen the 2 fender screws enough to pop the rear bumper loose. Checked the instructions and realised I missed removing the 1 wire on the RH end attached to a green box hidden in the RH rear fender well. Instructions says to disconnect the cable OR, remove the bracket bolt holding the green box in place. Neither instruction is of any use. The cable you disconnect runs across the spare wheel well rear lip and is taped to the rear light harness. There is a second smaller black wire that is hard wired into the green box and that goes to the rear bumper. I can see no way to remove that. The green box cannot be taken out through the rear panel.

Then find a second wire on the opposite end on the LH of the bumper. No mention of this. Find another instruction for the rear backup sensor repair and it tells you to disconnect a connector (make sure it is the correct one it says). After removing several random large pieces of foam my son sees a box velcro'd to the RH rear frame in the RH rear inner fender well. Again no instructions on how to remove the connector. Yet another Volvo random connector. Only instruction is careful the wires are fragile. Well that was not helpful. Cannot see how to disconnect either connector. When I look at the picture, the brown connector looks like it is missing a cable tie to secure the cables to the connector, and the black connector looks like someone has perhaps broken the tab like on the brown one. Black cable seems in there good so don't want to force it loose.

So, questions:

1) How to remove the connector on the black box to release the cable to allow LH endo of bumper to me removed from car.

and

2) How to remove the RH end cable to get that end off?

Next question will be how to get into the sensors as they are sandwiched between the various layers of the rear bumper.

I've added pictures below if they help:

For the connectors on the black box, they should be the kind where you can either push down with your fingernail/flat screwdriver on the yellow box. Or use a pick to lift up under the plastic tang in the red box. Then wiggle the connector out.

On the other side, can you get the (appears to be) 10mm bolt out to free the bracket?

Yes I have had that bolt out, but I still could not remove the RH end as there is a short (maybe 8-10") single black wire that runs out through the back panel into the bumper. Short of opening the box to see how it is held in there assuming the box can be opened) I can only think I may have to cut the wire and then maybe use a bullet connector for the future should it need to come out again. That is unless I am missing something?
