What is attached to my intake tube?

Post by counselorm24 »

Hello All,

First time with a Volvo that someone gave me. I am in the process of cleaning up some thing on the intake tube, in addition to replacing the MAF, as it had a code and will not run or idle. There is a flange that a part seems to lock/into or sit into, close to the part that attached to the throttle body. Does anyone know what this is? It is very dirty and gummed up and i would like to replace it if i can, but do not what it is.

I will attach a photo as well.

Also, I have a new Intake tube coming in soon, I know this one is very damaged, but need to see if it will run first with the new MAF sensor.

Don’t know that one but the 1996 guys will chime in

You can get good parts explosions at the volvopartswebstore by putting in your car info

Isn’t it just the connection to the Idle Air Vslve system?

Is that from a turbo engine? I have not had an 850 turbo yet so don't recognise the strange trumpet on the end of the tube. On later engines that is where the pre-heat valve sits (senility prevents me recalling it's Volvo name just now). So I think abscate is onto something with his suggestion. There should be something connected to that 'trumpet' which would then have a pipe running over to the Idle Air system or the PCV system and intake manifold.

That describes the way it is setup, however i do not believe this is a turbo setup. At least i never looked in depth as it didn't have the turbo gauge on the dash. But the other end seems to have a valve that run across the engine and goes somewhere else. I'll take a swing by later on and and look at it and see if i can pull off more parts to clean, seems to be full of gunk.

Thank You!

my EU spec 96 Turbo w/o EGR doesn't have that trumpet. Neither has my 94 Turbo nor my 95 NA.

That's flame trap housing on n/a engine.
Actually...flame trap is locking in there.
It's a part if pcv n/a system('96-'97 850 and '97 -'98 s,v70) and that "valve" on what you're refering to which goes across the engine....part of it goes to the nipple at left side of the intake manifold.

The car will not run and idle properly(if run at all) without flame trap attached and new MAF will not make things better because there will be a lot of unmetered air comming into the engine.

Old maf is probably ok...but you will need to reconnect those parts.
There is also o-ring between flame trap and that housing.

OK, excellent! I still have all the parts and the flame trap with O-ring is there too. It was already connected before I dismantled everything. I just got back from where the car is parked and i gave the flame trap a good cleaning, it wasn't as bad as I thought. I'm awaiting the throttle body gasket to com in tomorrow morning so i can put that all back together and the MAF sensor assembly should come in the mail so I can complete the assembly and see if it fires up.

I know the person who had it before put a ton of work into it, as he is a retired mechanic. He gave it to his son in law to drive while his 07 Malibu was down. He gave me the Volvo in exchange for fixing the Malibu (a $200 job) as he was going to send it to the scrap yard for $170. Hopefully I can save it from the crusher and enjoy it, I simply love the older boxy Volvo sedans. Although I do wish it was the generation before.

However the first issue it had before the stalling, was sporadic overheating, which i will have to tackle after i get it to idle first. I do know they replaced the radiator and coolant tank assembly a few months ago, and I believe they said the fans never kick on. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to look for and how to test after i get it to start and idle? I do see some fan modules under the top of the shroud.
I was going to start by removing the fan assembly and trying to power it directly to see if it will spin.

Thank You All For The Info!
-Michael
