Hello, New to this club and new to Volvo ownership.
I bought a used 1998 Volvo V70-XC AWD out of Chicago
and had it shipped to Dallas. It drove for a couple of days and the
service engine light came on. Took it to Autozone and read the codes
Needed a gas cap, drove a couple of days light came back on and found a
vacuum line broken, replaced disconnected battery to erase the codes.
Now when I tried to have it inspected computer says monitors not ready.
Guy told me drive 60 miles I drove it 600 miles and still get Not ready.
I need help, do I disconnect the battery and try that again or do I have to buy a used computer or do I have to buy a New computer.
any advise will be helpful
Thanks
will not pass inspection

I have a 98 S70 and mine is the same way as your. It's a bear to get the monitor routines to start running. I usually give it a hundred miles or so and if the routines haven't started to run, they never will. I disconnect the battery and try again. Eventually they will run. I've never been able to get them to run just driving around town. I usually have to drive it on the highway.

STOP DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY
(Both of you)
Don't you realize that when you do that, the "readiness" goes back to 0?
That is not the way you clear a code, you use a code reader, borrow one or buy one but you have to stop what you're doing... now.
Sometimes there can be up to 6 things to "get ready" they come on one at a time, when you do this, you erase them and start all over.
I just had to do this to a 99, the only reason it wasn't ready was BECAUSE OF A DEAD BATTERY, the same code you get when the battery is disconnected!
(It took me about 150 miles of all around driving). The 1st day got rid of 3 codes, the 2nd day, 1 more and the last one finally cleared after the 3rd day of driving.
These cars can be a bugger to get into readiness for emmisions. There is a specific drive cycle, ask your Volvo dealer what it is

Here are the instructions (Remember that you have to do all of this twice):
Introduction 1
This on-road driving sequence will allow all of the diagnostic functions
an opportunity to run. After two correct, consecutive TRIPS, the
readiness codes should be set to COMPLETE, provided no diagnostic
trouble codes have been stored.
General Instructions 2
Engine temperature at start must be below +50

I want to thank you all for your help and suggestions
I will try the road test twice (I assume I should wait
about 3 hours between tests) And I will never disconnect the battery again.
I will post the results and follow-up
You have no idea how scared I was about having to replace the computer.
Thanks again

Actually, I believe you can do the drive one after the other...the engine temperature is suppose to be low at least for the first time. Of course you can wait until it cools and then do it again as well. Either way.

I've tried clearing the coded with the ODBII tool and I haven't had any better luck bringing the car into readiness. I don't doubt what you're saying JRL, but neither method has worked well for me. I've tried the driving cycle as well and that doesn't do anything on my 98 either.
I know that if I use my OBD2 code reader to clear a DTC code it also clears all the emission readiness indicators, and the reader instructions warn of this in the manual.
Since I live in SC, we don't have any car inspections of any kind. So I don't worry about emission inspection readiness. I do not know how long I will have to drive my 855T before the reader shows it will pass emission testing, assuming it would.
Sorry I could not be of more help.

I didn't say it always works but it's better than disconnect the battery.pfeener wrote:I've tried clearing the coded with the ODBII tool and I haven't had any better luck bringing the car into readiness. You always have the possibility of frying stuff when reconnecting the battery.
These cars are a royal PIA to get into readiness. Both Volvo and Audi suffer from this malady

Inspection Up - Date
Got the ECU monitors to read ready. I do not know if it
took all 850 miles or if it was the road test. Emission test
passed with flying colors.
But I still did not get my sticker
the parking brake would not hold. Went home and found
a bunch of rusted parts and that the cable was broken
check with local chain stores with no luck.
Somebody know of a good source that you have had
good luck with. I figure the dealer will cost about an extra
25%
Thanks again
For all your advise and help.
