Re: The great P80 Volvo Bloopers - Idiots - Fails thread - April 2020
Spent a week on my back taking out the AWD unit in a 2000 V70XC because of the infamous whine. Got everything back together and it still had the whine. It was the axle. Removing the axle was Step 1 of the operation.

Years ago(many) working on an American 4x4. Picked up a factory rebuilt v6 directly from the manufacturer. Installed in my driveway with a friend. All went well on r & r and started right up and ran well...... for a short time. Suddenly while running it developed a knock. Long story short, upon removal of the new rebuilt we discovered we missed a vinyl sticker that was on it. The sticker became oil soaked, became unstuck and blocked the oil pickup. Happy ending was that the manufacturer replaced the engine with another(we didn't mention the blocked pickup) and also paid me for my own labor to install the 2nd rebuilt.

My 96 NA wagon has been plagued the last 18 months by random stalling that often (not always) resulted in no-start condition. If I let it cool and come back in an hour, it would always start back up. Would happen every couple of months. This is a run-to-fail car and the one I drive the least. About three years back it was totaled while parked then I bought it back from insurance and put it back together using a parts car from a neighbor. I only use this wagon in town, so I have been living with the occasional stalling and getting by fine with only minor inconvenience, though it had been getting worse this winter.
Spark, fuel and compression always looked good. So over a couple years of troubleshooting I've swapped in pretty much everything (I thought) - cam and crank sensors, coil, FPR, ECT sensor, air and fuel filters on schedule, spark plugs kept up with, etc. etc. Checked out the charging system. Nothing fixed it!!!
This spring the factory water pump (140k) started weeping so I geared up to do some work on the engine and vowed to figure out the stalling problem. I checked my logs because I wondered if it's time to get new ignition parts, and saw the last time I changed the cap/rotor was ... never! In my defense it's only been 8 years and 45,000 miles since I got the car ... yet somehow I never checked cap and rotor through all the troubleshooting.
DOH!
Cap was riddled with hairline cracks inside, electrodes had huge clumpy deposits on them. The rotor was worn to a nub with no metal protruding out beyond the plastic. Swapped in some 25k Bosch parts that I replaced early on one of my turbo P80 cars, running smoother now and more to the point - no stalls!

when I went to Dallas on last month, I forgot to check the oil. I went to 4 junkyards and made it just in time to 4th one and was able to get my new hood on. I thought I should check my power steering fluid once more before I embarked on the trip back. then I was like "eh" *shrug shoulders* "I'm sure I have oil but I might as well check." I check the one inch of dipstick and there's about 2-3mm of oil on the tip. I thought for sure I was busted. but nope I got to Walmart just fine and bought a jug of oil. I think low oil is least of my worries now with this clunky engine. I didn't know doing maintenance on injectors could have such consequences.

Near blooper.
First rule of dolly towing...check tightness of all the straps.
Second rule of dolly towing..don’t forget to check lugnuts on towed vehicle
Got 5 minutes from the pickup point, and had two Wobblies.
Since I was on a single lane highway in heavy traffic, I zipped them down with my Bosch small impact, drove to parking lot, then mashed then to 125 ft lbs
Luckily I can see both tires in the mirrors

Abscates 'lugnuts' are sure loose with this new purchase!!
Best of luck with this and hope it can be resurrected as it sure looks like a nice starting point. Glad to help if I can.
Neil.
