Sometimes, when I turn on the heater fan, I hear a loud screech. It lasts for a while, then goes away.
Anybody know why it is doing this?

HI
I have a 91 740 wagon which is the same shape as the 940 so I think the information below is still valid.
Heater fan is found under the dash above the foot bay area (left hand side on right hand drive models).
You need to remove the plastic paneling before you can get at the fiddly bolts to remove the fan.
If this is where the noise is coming from, investigate as often there is a build up of leaves and other debris in there. Enough so that it can block the condensation drain hose, filling the unit with water and having it splash about your feet!.
The noise could be due to damaged bearings in the fan or simply the build of crud in the cylinderical fan blades.
Get under the car and put a piece of wire up the condensation drain hose to clear it (watch out you don't get wet if you unblock it).
Cheers
