I hate that you got cold feet! Where is that oil coming from? That box is right there begging to be changed!!! Is it seeping oil? I went out and took some pictures of my engine for comparison. Yours doesn't look that bad for 19 years old really. The real question is: how well was the system operating? I'm assuming you did the glove test before buying the car.? June

Yeah just worried I might stumble on something, wish I knew someone here in Seattle to help as I moved here from Canada. Oh well. I took some pictures of TB cleaned up and the other parts I cleaned up ready to go tomorrow morning.

Oh wow just seen your pictures...see that's how mine would look had I owned this car from the beginning lol. Yeah I guess previous owner had an oil leak before sometime. I've cleaned the bottom of the car and sprayed it with brake cleaner. Checked it multiple times and it's nice and dry. Thank God. But yeah the PCV box area looks nasty SMH.

I encourage you to go ahead with PCV cleanup. It is not that hard, and lots of help available here. This assumes you have another vehicle available so you can take your time.

If you take on the project, also get high temperature wire loom and electrical tape to replace failing wire wraps. Also, the wire loom under the coil covers are likely disintegrated.

They're called "Oettiker" clamps, and they are used on PEX plumbing also.(all academic!) A pair of end nippers will work to crimp them as well as any purpose made plier. But you may want to file the jaws so they don't cut the clamp. Be glad you are where you are, anywhere from Bellevue to Bothell to Bremerton, you are in a Volvo haven. My nearest dealer is 50 miles away, and there is one good indie in my town. Try the forum to find local help.

If your car passed the glove test, and you don't need to do the PCV service, at least clean the area around the box really well, and maybe if you can look at the hose that goes to the block on the back of the box with a mirror or something, do that. If you only clean it, get in and take a look occasionally, to see if it is getting wet again.

Hey everyone...I just wanted to say that I did my PCV system, intake, and throttle body all but myself... It's my first experience working on my auto so I was really excited when it started!!! Anyway...I wanted to let you guys in on what I used to clean the manifold and TB... DAWN DISH SOAP MAKES A SPRAY! All I did was spray the parts, left it overnight and hosed it off in the morning. Very little scrubbing involved...I wish I knew how to upload photos because I'd like to show off my nice clean engine and parts...

Nice Work, looks GREAT! And congrats on your confidence builder. These cars are great for working on mostly. Parts are arranged so that you may have to remove something to access what you need, but it is done in a logical manner. With the guidance found here and in the plethora of videos, you can do a lot of things without VIDA or similar. (one day I'll get set up). Keep up the good work.

Thanks!!! I'm really grateful for this site and the videos I've used to repair Harry the Volvo. I forgot to mention that obviously the breather box blew out my front cam seal... What a mess!! I think I may still have a leak. After my awesomeness, with the help of Dawn dish soap spray, and taking a 5 hour ish "test" drive to AZ, where I'm replacing the timing belt, I noticed some oil all over my engine shield and some around the oil filter... So again with the Dawn dish soap spray!!
