Not starting!! V40 2001, 150.000MLS

Post by skinny »

My faithful and abused Volvo(V40 2001) is now causing problems, having put 150.000 miles on it with the only real problem having being the replacements of the springs due to a manufacturing fault, replaced by Volvo Uk at their expense, faults are now coming thick and fast
Recently the drive belt had snapped and this i replaced only to have the replcement belt repeatedly throughen off and shredded.

The Volvo dealer then replace the tensioner and belt, this has again (after 1000 miles)started to delaminate this i noticed after what appeared OR rather sounded like the exhaust blowing or breaking, the car got me home and was left till first light and now with a fully charged battery wont start

Lights ok, dash ok, tries to start then nothing, i am thinking that the traffic management system may be stopping it perhaps or that the delamination of the belt may have got caught else where or that maybe the loud engine noise wasnt exhaust???

Anyone have any ideas, before i have it towed into the dealer

All suggestions welcome

Regards

Suzanne

Hi Suzanne,
Welcome to MVS. I certainly hope that the service belt didn't take the timing belt with it. On some other Volvo models this has happened. When you say it doesn't start, is there any sound at all...some kind of cranking or is it just dead silence? Either way, you should get your trouble codes read with a scan tool to see what might be up. Since it won't start, you will have to bring the tool to your house, I assume, or have your car towed somewhere. Not sure of the U.K, but in the U.S., most auto parts stores will rent one of these scan tools to their customers for a deposit which is returned once the tool goes back to them. You might call around locally to see if this is possible. Once you have the codes from your OBD-II port you can post them here and we can help you diagnose your problem.

It sounds like the dealer is responsible for yet another issue with your car so call them too. If they'll take responsibility, they may be willing to tow your car in and go over it again. Emphasize what has happened after their second service belt change.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks for that

The car tries to start, fires initially then stops, would this be the cam belt?

I have had a cam belt on another car go before after a drive belt was damaged but that went instantaneously

Would the cam belt when damaged make a loud rumbling noise (like a tractor) and still get me 20 miles home....?

I will have to get it into the garage on Monday

Will let you know next week

Thanks again

It's hard to say what the CAM (timing) belt did...it too could have frayed and then completely gone by the time you got home. Yes, the sound you describes does sound like what a bad Cam belt would do. Taking the belt cover off would confirm or disconfirm this.
