Newbie here. Restoring 98V70R
Hey everybody, Scott here. I'm in the process of restoring my old 98 V70R for my son's first car. Ive done quite a bit already with help from information from here, so thank you to my fellow Volvo enthusiasts! I've replaced the leaking fuel lines after dropping tank partially as posted here. Cut the floor to replace broken injector pump, rebuilt throttle assembly, redone the pads and rotors. Cap, rotor, and wires. My question now is the car hesitates under when you push the throttle. If you feather it you can hold 3k rpms easily, car idles fine, but literally drops rpms when you hit the gas...weird. I'm thinking IAC. But I'm thinking I'll be replacing about every sensor known to the swedes by the time I'm done!

What a good dad you are. I hope he appreciates what you are doing as a V70R is a challenging car at best to maintain as so many parts are now not available, in particular for the fuel system and the rear AWD system and suspension like bushes.
The hesitation could be caused by a lot of things:
I will add a list to which others may add or disagree but we have to start somewhere!
1) The 98 has (if I recall correctly) an 18T turbo. This is not the most responsive of turbo giving a bit of turbo lag. My car has the 19T turbo and is slow to pick up initially but once boost it on it is strong.
2) There are many rubber hoses in the engine bay which love to develop splits with age.
3) Crank and cam sensors.
4) TCV (turbo control valve). These can get sticky with age. If you have a junkyard with Volvos nearby, pull one from any turbo 98-00 V/S/C 70 and try swapping it out. I use an IPD TCV but it also has it challenges. I need it as my car runs more boost than the OE part can deal with.
5) Fuel pressure? For a 98 I would be looking for 42 psi at the intake Shraeder valve.
6( Have you replaced the fuel filter? What mileage has the car got on it?
Hope that is a start and others will jump in to add to this list.

Thanks Neil! Challenging to say the least. It's a New York car as well. I think you might be on to something with the cam/crank sensors. I seem to remember when I quit driving the car about 4 years ago that it possibly had an issue with one of those. Yeah I did the fuel filter, I'll keep hunting things down as I go. Not a turbo thing I don't believe. When the hell did they stop making parts for thos thing! What the heck!! So yeah a little frustrating but we'll figure it out.

Get a good ELM327 diagnostics interface version 1.4 or higher and 850 OBD-II to retrieve the diagnostics codes.
