Timing belt question

Post by patcal »

I have a receipt for a timing belt job that was done on my 98 S70 GLT in 2016. The receipt give a part number for the kit as TIMKIT005. My question is did this include the tensioner? There are only 2 references to that part number on google. Neither answer my question. My understanding is that these mechanical tensioners can break. The car only has 8000 miles on the belt but 4 years. Should I be concerned?

I don't think you have any worries. If it was sold as a " kit " then I would think the tensioner was included. And 8k over 4 years is all good.
However normally the water pump is replaced along with the belt, but I think that's just because it's right there.

Water pump was done. It was listed separate from the kit. Thanks.

Since your car have mechanical tensioner then yes, likely it was changed. If hydraulic I wouldn't assume.

Water pump is usually good to at least 200k, better to leave the old factory one in there than put in a crappy aftermarket one.

So would we be better off changing the w.p. every other belt change, or once the original is gone, every belt change ? Just wondering for the next time I have to do it.

The general opinion is Aisin was the OE supplier to Volvo. Some reckon you can see on the pump where the Volvo logo has been ground off. Does that mean they don't meet Volvo QC so get sold on as Aisin? They are still good pumps though and probably better than anything other then OE (assuming Volvo still supply Aisin made units these days).

Anyway, Volvo normally suggest changing the OE pump every 2nd belt change. For the cost v's an engine wreck I would consider changing every change if using non-OE pumps. Some aftermarket ones have been known to fail.

Considering for my cars that means every 10 years as my 'R' has done about 1,000 miles a year!

Thanks for all the help. I think I feel a little more comfortable. I have never had a interference engine before.
