My vehicle is a 2006 V70.
49 times out of 50 the car starts first time. Recently when I turn the ignition I see
all the dash lights but just get 'a click'. After making several attempts the engine
will spark up....a bit concerning if a trip has to be made and get stuck in the middle
of nowhere.
As a novice and having to take a guess would you guys suspect a faulty starter
motor and would a garage be able to 'test' same for any problem.
Thanks for your time.

Should have added that the battery is relatively new but have not checked any connections.
Thanks.
Thanks.

The click? You mean the starter engages but the engine won't start, or turn the key and nothing happens? If nothing happens when you turn the key you probably have a bunch of keys hanging from your Volvo key and have ruined the ignition switch. Volvo ignition switches don't like keys and junk swinging weight around. If the engine cranks but no start every so often especially cold in the morning your crankshaft sensor is likely starting to fail. If that is the case Volvo or someone with VIDA needs to plug your car in to verify. Pay the diagnostic fee at your dealer. Our 07 C70 just had the crankshaft sensor replaced this week.$450 at Volvo parts and labor. Shut engine off and no start again! Towed it in. My 04 S80 did the occasional long cranking time and they found the intermittent bad sensor right away. Eventually it would have failed and left me stranded... June

Thanks for that...I will remove all the 'timber' from key fob and see what happens.
Interestingly I had a problem a few months ago with the key ( would not lock doors ) Had to resort to main dealer. Felt an idiot
when he said.....nothing wrong ! Im thinking more 'key fob' as a result.

If it's the ignition switch it will have to be replaced. Then don't add anything to the key to protect the new switch. Being so intermittent maybe you will get lucky with removing the weight from the key. Keep us informed! June

The "click" is a starter motor intermittent failure i think. May not result in a fault code. I see your in the UK is the car manual , always park on a hill.

Besides the good suggestions above, I had that click when my battery was too low to turn the starter, while still all cabin and dash lights would work. I'm not saying that's your case, but that makes me think at the possibility of a damaged wire somewhere. Not exactly the happiest scenario. A few locations may want to look at - it takes a look from close-up with a flash light: wire at big the radiator fan connector on top of the radiator - I believe the thin wire may get corrosion where it enters the connector or close to that place, small wire at the starter - hard to access this small metal clip, may corrode the wire under the plastic right near the metal clip. I also wonder if the started solenoid may get stuck? Sometimes having someone tapping on the starter while turning the key may get it going. Also the two large red cables behind the fuse box above the ABS module (inside engine bay) may crack close to the securing 13mm bolt (deep socket). At the battery the cables need inspected under the plastic insulator and at the small black box with cables behind the battery. Also the CEM on 06 may get water on it, may look for traces with a flash light

Thanks for all your input.......
I am becoming more convinced that the problem was the 'debris' hanging down from the ignition key.
Since removal of same I have not had a problem....famous last words !
Interestingly it does say in the handbook there should be nothing dangling as the immobiliser kicks in.
Regards.

It's a month since posting this problem.
Since removing key fob timber I have not had a problem. Seems it doesn't take much to activate immobiliser.
Thanks all.
