General Questions before I purchase a 1987 240 DL 131K
Hi! I just found this sight, and I am hoping I can get some good information. I am looking at purchasing a 1987 240DL (I've been told its a 244), that has been sitting outisde for a little over a year. I know it needs a new battery, and I will have it checked over before I purchase it. I am very hesitant, even with all the good information that I have found about Volvo's. I have 3 children, and it will be my main mode of transportation. It has 131K miles on it thus far. Body is in good shape, normal for it's age. Does anyone have any stories, general problems ran into with this model or ANY helpful information that I could use. I do not want to waste my money having to put another $1 or $2 grand into after the first month. I know the owner, he has the records from his ownership days, and I know he took care of it. Just any information would be helpful!! Thank you!!
If the car his been sitting for a year without being run you may have fuel injection problems right off. Fuel ages and becomes a problem. Chances are this car needs a complete inspection and tune up. Lots of folks think the 240 series is the greatest, but I am hesitant to give it my full indorsemnet.
Have a knowledgeable Volvo mechanic check it for what all it needs. It could easily go an extra bunch of bucks.

The first major expense on any car that has been sitting for a year, presumably without moving at all, is a set of tyres. Those on the car will be out of shape now and I would not even consider a test drive until they were replaced.
Add in the fuel problems as sseir39 has said and a brake system that could have major problems due to corrosion and possible moisture in the fluid and the bills are starting to mount.
I do know people who have rescued vehicles after 10 or more years standing and they have spent a small fortune restoring them - but that is a hobby. They are not loooking for an everyday runner.
Bill.
