Congratulations!
I kinda figured you’d end up with an XC.
Once you get to “stage 0”, check out ECU tunes. I’m running Hilton and IPD tunes on our cars. I like both, but haven’t sampled a Hilton in an LPT yet. Love my stage 2+ in my V70R.

Nice. You might even have the last year with a key for the rear tailgate!Starbuck wrote: ↑02 Aug 2020, 21:04 I HAS VOLVO!
On August 1, 2020 I welcomed a beautiful baby boy (2004 XC70) into my family. Ben Wash entered my world weighing 3,699 approximate pounds and is 186.3 inches long, depending on the website. He joins siblings Steve, Juniper Spice, Maia, Kira, Bear, King George, Burt, Izzy, Paco, King Tut, Boy, GB and Christine.
Now I am tasked with getting him in-law road ready.
166k miles.
I'm happy to finally join you.
Let the wrenching begin!

Thank you guys! I will look into tuning him (for efficiency only) once I've got the PPI in my hands and everything looks good. I'll lift him up myself too and see what strange wonders the Swedes have built. I'm trying to search for recommended fluids and well, everything. I'll change his oil and introduce him to the joys of Motul. His brakes are soft and squishy to me so the list also has soft line replacement unless they're glaringly new and a fluid flush and change. The PS reservoir hose needs to be swapped out too (with new). Hmm...plugs?
I'll hit the parts yard this weekend for floor mats and anything else I can pilfer (cargo cover?). Sadly of the four places I looked at online last night, only one has an 01-07 V/XC.
If it's a separate key for the tailgate, I did not get it. If it's a button on the fob, yes I have that.

Techna-Fit makes good SS braided lines for P2's, cheapest on Amazon. Get the fitment/part number off FCP & then transfer it over to Amazon (about $50-60 for a V70R w/4 lines). Dot 4 for brake fluid, I ended up using SuperTech as I went through all my expensive stuff trying to get my bleeders to stop leaking. Fortunately you will only have to deal with 1 bleeder per caliper. Zimmerman makes outstanding coated rotors, paired with Akebono ceramic pads & you have great braking.
Sometimes there is enough extra hose for the PS reservoir (return line) & you can snip off the end, then use double (X2) worm-drive clamps or Oetiker clamps.
Volvo/Bosch plugs only. Very inexpensive & replace at 40k intervals to reduce the likelihood of needing to replace ignition coils (again, Volvo/Bosch for these also).
Premium fuel only.
Water pumps are typically stout and good/problem free until 200k, so most people do coolant change at the same time. Zerex G-05 or Volvo's own coolant. Capacity is ~2 gallons so you'll only need to purchase 1 gallon of concentrate.
Nothing special for gear oil (front bevel gear (transfer case) or rear final drive), just 75-90 & whatever brand. I use inexpensive synthetic gear oil and change out annually. Haldex/DEM/AOC will need the special Volvo AOC oil. I'd encourage looking at doing a filter and AOC oil change for your Haldex, especially if the filter cover appears original. You can tell if the filter has been updated by the "finned" cover.

The key-hole is to the right of the tailgate lever you pull on to open. It is covered with a black rubber plug (if you have one).

Sweeeeet! Thank you! I was loading crap into my carts to buy last night and wondering if plug brand mattered. Much appreciated!

Also, take advantage of FCP's parts guarantee. For example, I've done 3 timing belt (et.al) changes on our 290k XC70 and I only paid for the first set of parts. Very nice!

That’s actually not true. Some had them, some didn’t. My 2004 XC, 2004 V70 AWD both have them yet my 2004 V70R does not. I’ve never checked my 2001 XC.

+1 on the Volvo plugs and Zimmerman rotor, Akebono pad combo for brakes. Works well for me and I'm in a hilly area. For ATF, use the correct spec. fluid. Toyota ATF (of the proper spec) is compatible and way less expensive than the Volvo stuff. I would suggest a transmission drain and fill. You are probably about ready for a full front suspension refresh too (unless already done). Normally with Volvos I'd say don't bother with changing the springs, but the XCs are known for breaking them. My one long distance tow was due to a broken spring (thankfully broke on parking garage at work at 5 mph, but I would replace springs (Lemforder) in a suspension redo.

Oh, good. That's what ours is, '04 XC, Betty. Last year of the glass headlights. No windshield cowling leaks. Less electrical troubles (as I understand it).
Ever Forward!
