2000 C70ETM related hidden short [ bad ground point]

Post by subzerocarfanatic »

Well I still have had no luck finding this short that makes the ETS dash light that is related to the ETM. It only happens when I hit bad bumps in the road and where I live the roads are not maintained well.
I have went over and over the wiring harness, ETM harness etc etc. So I decided to buy the Power Probe ECT3000 Intelligent circuit tracer for shorts and opens to hopefully resolve this issue so my wife has a car to drive, the car runs very good except for this problem. Wish me luck!

I just wanted to let those of you that have assisted and helped with this topic or followed it that I finally resolved the short. It was in a very inconspicuous location that was hard to reach and impossible to see, well the main short was at least, I had two separate wiring issues that were causing the lack of power, the ETM ( ETS dash light) coming on when hitting bad bumps in the road that would cause the car to stall out was the worst one, that was the hard one to find.On the passenger side right behind and under the headlamp there is a group of wires grounded to the chassis with a 10mm head screw, it was very loose, as soon as I found it there was no doubt it was the culprit because I could barely touch the wire housing where it went into the wire loom going into the ECM housing at the bottom where the main plug is , and I would lightly touch it when key was on and could hear the ETM going on and off as I touched it so i just traced it under the headlight and found the loose screw. Thank God it is fixed,it has taken me several months to find it, I was determined and it paid off finally. The other issue with my coils where 2 were melted at the coil plugs, the harness to the coils had 2 or 3 bare and nearly broken spots, I found a good used Coil harness from eBay and installed it, no more issues now. This car is amazingly surprising how nice it runs and the power it has when all is working properly and in sync, thanks to everyone who helped me along the way. We could not be happier with the car, our first Volvo and we have both fell in love with the C70 Convertible. I am certain I will have issues in the future down the road, thanks to MVS help is only a click away. I will post pictures later.

Thank you very much, it was frustrating at time to the point I wanted to give up but it's not in my nature to give up. I have OCD bad with everything I do especially anything cars, so everything has to work and i'm very picky about how it looks, every nook and cranny has to be clean, even the engine bay, wire looms etc. It has up and down sides I suppose being overly meticulous about every detail but it has made me an amazing car detailer over the years, so not all bad.My next thing I would like to do for my wife is get new leather for both front seats if I can find someone who does good upholstery for the Volvo's and I want to replace the Convertible top so she has a back window, there was no back glass in it when we bought it. I found a HARTZ one for $550.

Why can’t I find guys/gals like you when I buy cars? Instead I get the retailers who thinking vacuuming up half of the cat litter is clean.

(. To be fair, Evans cars I have bought and Tims were both really clean)

Jim’s car needed 4 qtips to be clean, and he only gave me three
