btw. to redo the rivets.
1) use a large enough drill bit and drill off head. rivet pops out. sometimes they spin which then becomes a challenge but not a big deal.
2) get new proper plastic coated riviets from idpusa and pop back in. Assuming of course your fender liner still has the holes intact.
Hit curb and CV axle broken. Time to junk it?

other folks forgo the rivets and use the generic plastic Christmas tree style push in connectors. ie: push in connector that has fins on it to grab in the hole.amblerman wrote: ↑18 Aug 2020, 12:54 btw. to redo the rivets.

I can see those working well too assuming you get the right size

Don't use standard rivets or washers. These are designed to pull through if you hit something with the car and not rip off the mountings. I found this out the hard way with a car I bought when I found the fender was creased when the PO had run it over a curb.

Look at the website row 52 (www.row52.com) There are an XC in Lynnwood, and one in Lake Stevens just waiting for you to pull the parts. I would just unbolt the top of the strut, pop the caliper off and remove the nuts from the A-Arm (Leave the bolts back there!), next, straight up from beneath with a 5/8 inch chisel, one pop between the joint and the trans should do it. (and don't forget the bearing cap halfway up the axle first) and pull the whole assembly, hub/Knuckle, Axle, Lower control arm, and strut, once it is out of the car, then separate the strut if yours is good. Or list it and be educated, so that you can inform a prospective buyer of what is involved in the repair. As was mentioned earlier, at an experienced mechanics pace, it's an hour or two. I don't work that fast anymore either, so I would block out a half to a full day. And use a cheater pipe on a 1/2 drive ratchet to break the LCA nuts loose.

If it helps I got a knuckle for $35 from a parts yard with the wheel bearing still attached. It was a pretty easy swap as FLXC90 more or less outlined.

Thanks FLXC90! Great help with the row52 info. I plan to get help from a puller. I've been to the pick-n-pull yard before but they are familiar and know how to work safely there. The idea to get wheel hub all together is great. I am already worried about how to separate the steering knuckle from wheel hub because the ball joint is gone. I can only think of welding them together so I can undo the 4 bolts. Now with the entire wheel hub attached it is a lot easier. It is just quite heavy though.
Any tricks to push the CV axle into transmission? Can't use a hammer to tap on it right?
Now the biggest challenge is the 4 bolts for the control arm. There is not much rust on them. Hopefully I can manage to do it. Or hire a part-time mechanic.

D... I may still need to weld the ball joint. While the whole wheel hub is moving around I can't even unbolt the brake caliper.
Will hammering on caliper bracket bolts damage the stretched strut?

To get the axle in IIRC you just kinda mush it gingerly into place and kinda push/pop the CV joint to pop it in. Or maybe you can just push it. I'm not sure if there is a circlip or not on that side. I remember it being easy.
You should probably pick up a new rim too, looks like it was whacked pretty good on one of the pictures. If the wheel hit a curb hard enough to snap what it did, chances are good the rim is fubar'd.
