Has anyone replaced their rear-most muffler support?

Post by KyDave »

2005 XC70. Apparently, having the exhaust support rods rust away from the pipe is so common that there is a standard repair bracket which I have installed at the rear axle area.

But what about the rear-most tailpipe? I have mine wired up to the rubber isolator now. FCP Euro sells this as an OEM Volvo repair part but I can't see how it would attach or even fit properly. It is not sold with clamps or any other part. Any ideas?

I'm in canada so pretty rough on the rust side.. as you mention, the original bracket attaches basically on the tail pipe and the whole exhaust weights about 1 ton. My tail pipe finally gave up and I had to weld it back which is not hard but you need to lower the muffler. My advice is not to wait until the pipe falls off - as soon as it starts to crack, have it welded. Just this piece of pipe weights like 2lbs, really thick metal. For the bracket itself, I went very getto and used a small chain wrapped around the muffler box - been there for 1 year and still solid - I tried before with a steel wire but it didn't last, reason for the galvanized chain. If you don't mind spending a little, I would install a custom muffler box, it doesn't have to be the square-ish volvo kind, any aftermarket muffler can fit in there with some modification for the bracket

Two (2) solutions...

- IPD has the correct clamp.

- local muffler shop can find a piece of rebar and weld it.

I bought 1/4 music wire from home depot , bent to shape to fit through the rubber donut and held to the muffler pipe with 2 muffler U clamps.
Silly simple , cheap and has held up 3 years so far.

Hmmm... The IPD OEM Volvo part is a different number has all the same problems of the clamp I found. But their generic clamp looks useful! Thanks!
