Speedometer Needle.

Post by RobertoGonzalez »

Hello folks! I have created this post because I have an issue with my speedometer needle, in my 1991 Volvo 960. Almost every time when I push the breaks, and the car needle goes to 0 km/h, the needle jumps one time and goes down again. It jumps from 0 to 30 km/h. Sometimes, when I push the breaks and I drive very, very slow, like 05 km/h, the needle jumps like 3 times, from 05 to 20 km/h. When I drive normally, the needle it seems to work fine, no problems with that. I have to say that the speedometer needle jumps when you feel that the car has stoped completely (when you feel that the weight of the car has settled) not only when the needle goes to 0 km/h. That appears in the short video I uploaded.

Any comments?

Thanks!

Your speedometer is likely electric with a magnetic speed sensor at the rear differential housing. As an electrical device, any bare wire will short the signal. Since the fault occurs when you apply brakes, there may be a lose wire that moves and shorts. Get the car elevated and look for the sensor and follow the wire to the front. I would look for a wire problem where it is exposed before entering the body.
