You need to take a long hard ride on the interstate to burn the rest of that off and then you'll be fine. You really don't want to try to re-route the exhaust on your car.

A few other things to look for if you have the burning fumes problem.... all were true in my case and I was never sure which contributed most to the problem cos I fixed em all at pretty much the same time......

1) Leaky Brake Pressure sensor - its mounted onto the side of the master cylinder and if its leaking it drops Brake Fluid onto the heat shield below which eventually runs onto the manifold - this was a service recall on early 850's

2) Leaking Camshaft Oil Seals - it can be difficult to spot this until you start dismantling things - the oil runs straight down the back of the engine onto the manifold.

3) Broken PCV pipe - vents crankcase fumes straight into the engine bay.

Hope this helps you or anyone else suffering this problem.

Off topic - Unfortunately, I'm selling my 850 (which has been sitting on my driveway for the last 6 months) so this will probably be my last post  - thanks to everyone for your help with my past 850 "challenges" - keep up the good work and happy motoring :D

P.S. for anyone who's interested, I've finally succumbed to the financial pressures and joined the dark side (diesel Volkswagon Passat) and I can confirm that compared to my T5, its dull, sluggish, boring, uncomfortable, etc, etc, etc.

Ok, I've checked everything I can find as for a vacuum leak. I tore all the turbo hoses off today and cleaned them and fond nothing clogged. I do see a positive crankcase exhaust. When I remove my dipstick the smoke streams out. Where in the world could things be clogged? Is it possible that the previous owner has the vacuum lines mixed somewhere? Is there a diagram out there that makes sense? I have one and you have to be a cert Volvo Mechanic to understand it, lol. How can I find this leak that is causing my turbo to surge and pull back?

Look on the underside of your hood for your vacuum diagram. It's small and hard to see so I took a digital picture and looked at it on my computer.
In regards to the clogs, most likely it's your PCV hoses...specifically it could be your oil trap (under your intake manifold) or your PTC nipple at the base of your accordion hose if the other hoses are all clear and routed properly.

Has the heater blank where your heater cables go through the firewall been disturbed?

If the metal blank in the firewall has been moved then engine fumes can easily get into the cabin.

Just my 2c's.

Well, I'm sure the oil trap is not clogged because before I realized that hose was off I always saw smoke coming up from that area under the intake. Once I reattached the hose I see no more smoke and that hose now leading over into the PVC has that smoke being pulled into the accordion hose. I took off the accordion hose and blew into both top and side nipples of the PVC and it appeared clear...air traveled in both directions. as for a diagram, it appears to have been torn off because I can't find anything. Now, the fumes smell, I'll have to look at the heater blank but are those the insulated ones? Thanks so much for your help. Love this site and love learning how to work on my Volvo.

If smoke flows from the oil trap is in no way clogged, right? How much, if any, resistance should there be in the oil trap? I still think I have a leak somewhere. My turbo has lost power and my fuel economy has diminished. That oil trap had the lone hose coming from the trap around top the intake lying off for a long time. Could this have damaged the trap? I see that the one hose leading around to the intake is coming from the side of the trap but the diagram on the FCP site has that hose from the intake going into the top of the trap. Is this right? They show a short hose from the side but not where is eventually ends up. Any idea or links on the actual whereabouts of all these hoses?

Like my previous post said, there is a vacuum diagram for your car on the back side of the hood...very small so I took a digital picture of mine which I could look at on the computer and print off. FCP's diagram for the oil separator was wrong (unless they changed it)....look here for more information on this: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/chat/p ... hp?t=13999
