89 245 GL FUSE problem.... Help.. Cannot figure this out

Post by Volvo_240_Atari_2600 »

Hello,

Florida, USA
1989 240 GL wagon non turbo
213k on the clock
Power door locks/power windows, AC, automatic tranny

OK...
Fuse #1 is giving me problems.

Every now and then the power door locks, radio and clock stop working.
Fuse #1 only says the three above items in my car, but apparently works the cigarette lighter, dome light and glove box light as well.

When this problem occurs, I remove the fuse, clean the contacts, and replace the fuse... But the strange thing is that the fuse is never bad.

At first I associated the problem with a dirty (white caking) of the fuse contacts/holder.

But I think that is not the case.

When I open the door during this time, the little bell rings, when I try to turn on the dome light, the light will not turn on, but the bell will ring, when I open the glove box, the light will not come on and the bell rings????

I don't get it.

I don't smoke any longer so no need for the cigarette lighter, but I keep my cell phone charger plugged into the lighter.

So today, it happened again... but the cell phone is drawing current from the car, and when I pulled the fuse... The cell phone was no longer drawing current but the stupid bell still rings....

Any clue as to how I should proceed?
Is there a bypass?
Could there be a short?
If so, where could it be?

Thank you.
Eric

My list of fuses for the '89 240s shows that fuse #1 covers: Cigarette lighter; electric side mirrors; radio, tailgate wipe/wash and the cruise control governor.

Fuse #8 covers: interior light; glovebox light; trunk light; engine compartment light; central locking; clock and electric radio antenna.

It may be worth checking fuse #8 for bad contact.

Bill,

Thank you once again.
I did fail to read #8 in depth and that was the problem,.

However, is there a chence that two fuses can be crossed?
Because I tried cleaning the contacts on the #1 several times and the radio would not come back.

Now when I did #8 last night it all came back.

The other thing is that my radio is not factory.
Is it possible that the installation drew power from the #8?

I did the installation myself, but I used a Volvo to aftermarket (JVC) radio harness.

Could that be the issue?

Thanks

I used a Volvo to aftermarket (JVC) radio harness.
If this is the harness that simply fits onto the Volvo plugs the only way I can see that it would change fuses is if it is drawing power from the electric antenna feed. The other thing that comes to mind is that a previous owner, if there was one, has re-routed cables. Not very likely, but a possibility.

If everything is working leave it alone. You don't want the gremlins withdrawing their labour.
