My mate bought a temporary car, a T4 S40 '98 and the thing misfires like crazy whenever the turbo is about to kick in. Easy driving is fine, but as soon as you hit the accelerator it starts banging and won't accelerate any further.
Precious owner said he changed the plugs and MAF, but that didn't help. First we thought based on google-ing that the coils are dead, but since CEL is on we checked the codes and the code was for camshaft position sensor. However after checking out the Camshaft PS, it has already been swapped for another one, but who knows when.
So, easy going it will go up to 6.5k RPM, but foot floored it will barely do 4k and start sputtering and banging. Could this just be the camshaft position sensor (since it isn't exactly cheap) or has someone some other insight into the issue?

I've had WOT (wide open throttle) hesitation issues on my '01 for the past decade and have never been able to track down the cause. New coils "helped", but I still get some misfire above 3/4 throttle.
I rarely have a need to go full throttle so I live with it and am happy with its 32.5 miles per gallon.

Doesn't really seem to have a lot of point to a T4, if it can't run with a turbo, eh?
