I need to replace the alternator in my 2001 S80 t6. I am trying to figure out if it is a free wheel or not.
I was able to get part numbers off the back of my current alternator, 0124515017 944284. I know it's 120A, as I can see that as well.
Any help appreciated.

The Bosch website show both with and without freewheel
https://www.boschautoparts.com/en/auto
What is the symptom?
Is the belt tensioner moving excessively?
It looks like you can upgrade to the freewheel style if you want to.
Good Luck
Paul
PS you will need a special tool to remove the old pulley if you have the freewheel type pulley

Thank you for the information, I found similar confusing info. Looks like both types were used. I read some references to 2.8 using free wheel, but nothing that was a solid confirmation. ALT is just shot - not producing any longer....been on it's last legs for awhile.

With a mirror get a vantage point where you can peek inside the alternator to see if it is spinning or not. Start engine observe alternator internals spinning. Have somebody switch the key off.
If the alternator internals stop at the same time as the motor. Pulley is not freewheeling.
If the alternator internals spin a little longer then the engine. Pulley is freewheeling.
You can't go wrong with a freewheeling. But you can go wrong with a solid pulley. Freewheeling pulleys came to use with larger alternators. A freewheel is there to keep the larger mass of a large alternator from damaging tensioner belts etc.
Same difference between stopping a small dog on a leash vs stopping a Mastiff on a leash. Sometimes you got to let the big dog run and come to a stop on its own terms.

All you have to do is look at the pulley? Thank God Volvo did not put the freewheel style on my S80 T6. It's one less thing to go wrong and really Volvo wasn't going for mpg or worried about every ounce of power with the T6. Here is my pulley which is not freewheel type on my T6. Notice the difference between the picture of the Genuine Volvo replacement clutch pulley and my pulley on my T6. The clutch pulley does not have a open center. I've been lucky as my alternator is factory still at 203K June
