Heater core replacement in RHD S70s

Post by Fosgate »

Hey guys,

Please with RHD S70s have you done the heater core replacement before?
From what I can see it looks like a major job where the dash would need to come out, AC gas would need to be evacuated and the whole unit where the heater core is need to be removed from the car ....

Watching some of the videos online seem to show that its quite a simple procedure in LHD configuration but not sure if thats the case with the RHD as the pipe for the heater core are pointing down and the only direction the core can slide is down and there would not be enough space to actually remove the core without removing the plastic housing that it sits in.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated before I go and start pulling the dash apart...

Thanks

I’ll let Mike chime in on this one. I think the RHD climate does have to come out

I will look tomorrow at my Haynes manual as it is a UK book it should help. From what I can see it is easier than on a LHD in the case of an 850, so not sure why a V/S70 would be worse.

Looks like you remove the under tray on the LHS to give access. This will require you to:

1) Remove the glove box liner. About 8 Torx screws, then carefully pull it out trying to not break the taps around the removed Tors screws.
2) Drop the lower tray down after removing the 2 Torx screws now that can be seen having removed the liner.
3) Disconnect the floor light connector and slide out the under dash tray.
4) If a 98 or older car you may have an aluminum knee bolster. If you do, there are 3 x 13mm(?) nuts to remove. 2 on the LHS by the door end and 1 on the RHS, I think it is the top hole. There is not one in the lower hole it is just a ratchet on the threads.
5) The bolster can be a bit of a bugger to get out as Volvo typically make them longer than the gap to remove them but it can be done without damaging anything. 99 on in North America don't have the knee bolster.

Then the replacement process should be no harder than the LHS steering cars, just with more access without a steering column or pedals to get in the way.

I'll double check tomorrow on this.
