A few weeks ago I overhauled my PCV system and upgraded to the 5/8" hose with spring reinforcement. Despite cleaning all the block ports, ptc valve and the breather box that were super clean to begin with, I was still getting slightly positive pressure on the glove test. Someone suggested I replace the dipstick seal. I went ahead and replaced both the dipstick seal and the tube seal. Now I'm getting slightly negative pressure. I've never had a good glove test since the day I got her. The old dipstick seal was flat and so tough that I thought it was part of the plastic around it. What a difference.

Well that is a new one to me so thanks for sharing. I've had the reverse issue where the crank pressure was blowing the dipstick out as the seals were worn on the dipstick. This might be a good addendum to add to a PCV service to change these parts as part of the process. This might explain why some people say they still get positive pressure like you found.

Got my 00 V70 R back from the dealer today. Thankfully they found no evidence of a head gasket leak. Experienced P80 mechanic I know worked on it (he runs an 850 AWD manual). Only thing he could suggest was the same thing I was thinking of. Car had sat for 8 months and then asked to move 8km to new home in -30C. It is possible the thermostat stuck closed. Radiator cooling fan ran perfectly and kicked in/out at specified values. So plan to change the thermostat at first opportunity. Can't believe the OE thermostat was $45 US!! That was my discounted price.

He could not find any evidence of the muffler knocking when test driving it. Maybe our 120lb weight difference makes a difference. What he did found was more concerning. He found that the rear wheels are rubbing on the brake flexi-hoses. This is weird as I have had the current 245/45/17" tires on Volvo rims for 8 years. Have to check if the brackets got bent when I replaced the sub-frame or if they can be bent out of the way slightly. Final option is to down size tires to 215/50/17". I have to replace the winter tires so will look at this.

Finally they flushed the auto trans for me. Oil has been there for who knows how long? I had thought it had been changed when the trans and RMS seals had been swapped out 6 years ago, but a recent check of the paperwork shows the ATF was not changed. Might explain the occasional rough change. Did feel a lot smoother and snappier throttle change so maybe it was long overdue!!

Neil.

I used an oil change and tire rotation to teach a friend's son some of the basics of owning your own car. He's 18 or 19 and a little timid but seemed really keen to learn more since I taught him to drive stick last week.

Oil still had some reddish color after about 5k mostly highway miles, but I think I'm burning about a quart of oil between changes. Valve stem seals are new and I've replaced every seal on the engine except the oil pump seal, so I guess it could be my rings?

Taught my girl friend the same thing. Lifting tires was a bit of an issue but doing the oil, and the brains are very helpful. She loves ugga-dugga on the wheel lugs!

1/2 quart consumption over 5k miles is pretty good. It's likely just due to normal wear. Not enough to worry about it!

Just had a flex pipe explode on my V70 late at night on the highway :( . Time to check costs to replace the section at my local mechanic, or see if i can pull a full system off one of the parts cars. 2020 just keeps getting better at this point.

To add to the flex pipe failure. Previous owner had a far less then honest exhaust shop. They welded the last flex pipe directly onto the exhaust manifold and pipes leading down to the catalytic converter. To do it right would be fairly costly as they would need to source both upstream and downstream oem parts. Hopefully i can see if a shop will be able to cut and put in a new flex pipe with the current system.

Started to remove the exhaust manifold in an effort to reduce the labour costs for the shop. Managed to make an appointment for Wednesday so my bike is gonna get a lot more use over the next week.
