2004 V70 2.5T 120K, battery drains, starts then stalls in 2 sec...

Post by cn90 »

Hi guys,

Car is 2004 V70 2.5T 120K miles, well maintained...
Battery is brand-new (one month old).

Three (3) days ago, drove fine, a 20-min trip. Went home no problem.

This afternoon (temp is 90F), nice day, car did not start.
Battery was 11.5V.
Friend jumped the car, battery went to 12.2V.

- Fuel tank at 3/4 full.
- After jumping battery for 15 min. My battery is now at 12.2V, car starts for 2-3 sec, then immediately dies.
- OBD code reader showed no error codes.

So, I am dealing with 2 separate (or related) issues:
1. Brand-new battery mysteriously went down to 11.5V.
2. Car starts, then stalls immediately within 2-3 sec. No error codes.

Hopefully someone with similar experience can help...

Thanks in advance!

PS: For those with PEM failure, when (how many miles) did it fail?

its not charging, should be 14v+ when running.
try reseating the small wire at the alternator, look for green gremlins in the plug.

12.2v is low but not necessarily dead (yet). it may still crank fine in summer days. 12.2v means the battery is only 30% charged

For the stall, can you try again while jumping the battery from another car? Does it still stalls ?

At 120k is too soon for the alternator but who knows. With the engine at idle, assuming the battery is not fully charged, the alternator must put out the max voltage to top it up - around 14.5v

If it's rather a current drain while parked, may try removing the alarm siren fuse - it may be under the dash, or maybe the CEM may have the water issue

Hey oragex,

I watched your youtube videos, very good, thanks.

Will try to charge using standard wall charger 12V and 2A setting.
In your experience using home charger at 12V and 2A, approx how long does it take to get to full charge,
assuming it is 11.9V at this time?

Let’s do the math

Total battery capacity 80mamp hours

11.9 is dead, s\o 0 amp hours

So 80 amp hours /2 amps is 40mhours

\due to magic of electrochemistry it will 2-3 times longer than that.

Yes, 5 days is about right. That is why people usually charge at 10 amps

So,

Hooked up charger using household current (120V), set it at 12V/2A:

- Time zero: 12.0V
- Time 1h later: 12.2V
- Time 2h later: 12.4V
- Time 3h later: 12.6V

Now try pull current out of it

Voltage isn’t a totally perfect way to assess battery state

Are your voltages after a 30 second , 4 amp load or fresh off charger ?

surface charge, it will drop before your eyes and settle lower.
winters coming, might be a good idea to get a 12v emergency jump box.
