Re: Coronavirus Thread

Post by j-dawg »

Here in CA the new case count has been dropping pretty rapidly of late, to around a third of what it was a month ago, despite things continuing to reopen. We seem to have put the fight about masks and social distancing behind us and are now finding our way to being a regular functional society again, with some limitations. I now feel that while I won't be happy about it, we've achieved a sustainable level of human interaction, which I could keep going for another year if I had to.

What breaks my heart is that if we'd taken these measures five months ago, that year would have only been a few months. Contact tracing could have had a hope of working and we could have been in the same position as the rest of the developed world is in now. But we live in a nation whose foremost political impulse is to fight, instead of solve problems. Any failure to disagree with your opponents is regarded as weakness. So here we are.

A friend asked me to bet on whether we'd still be wearing masks a year from today. I declined the wager. I have no idea. We have dug ourselves into a deep hole.

These tables show all available US states and territories and the COVID-19 data for the last 5 days. I have sorted the states alphabetically and added growth rates for last several days for all states with ranking of each day. Of course, this information changes daily. I have presented the table in two parts because of the screen shot, but it is actually one table in Excel.

Again, results change daily.
I am posting this information in the afternoon now (mostly). I try to do outdoor work in the cooler morning and indoor work in the afternoon.

State growth rates for September 29, 2020. All information is based on reported information and actual results may be different.

For your information, the top 5 states or territories yesterday in growth rate (the worst containment) are: Mississippi (0.134) with 97,638 cases, Wisconsin (0.121) with 119,955 cases, North Dakota (0.114) with 21,401 cases, Arkansas (0.099) with 82,755 cases, and Minnesota (0.098) with 98,447 cases. All states have reopened to various levels. Many states have now paused or reversed opening actions. Wisconsin has been in top 5 list for 18 of last 25 days. North Dakota has been in top 5 list for 58 of last 90 days. Arkansas has been in top 5 list for 21 of last 42 days. Minnesota has been in top 5 list for 38 of last 55 days.

A column on the right shows the current growth rate divided by the 5 day moving average. Federal Prisons were over 2.0 yesterday (red highlight). Guam, Maine, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, and Texas were over 1.5 yesterday (yellow highlight). This column is an early warning of increasing cases beyond day to day noise.

My calculated growth rate for USA is 0.0174 for yesterday, up sharply from previous day of 0.0147. This is not population or case number weighted.

I am posting this information in the afternoon now (mostly). I try to do outdoor work in the cooler morning and indoor work in the afternoon.

State growth rates for October 07, 2020. All information is based on reported information and actual results may be different.

For your information, the top 5 states or territories yesterday in growth rate (the worst containment) are: Montana (0.144) with 16,063 cases, New Hampshire (0.138) with 8800 cases, North Dakota (0.134) with 24,857 cases, South Dakota (0.132) with 25,906 cases, and Tennessee (0.132) with 207,455 cases. All states have reopened to various levels. Many states have now paused or reversed opening actions. New Hampshire has been in top 5 list for 21 of last 38 days. North Dakota has been in top 5 list for 63 of last 98 days. South Dakota has been in top 5 list for 20 of last 47 days. Tennessee has been in top 5 list for 5 of last 13 days.

A column on the right shows the current growth rate divided by the 5 day moving average. US Virgin Islands were over 2.0 yesterday (red highlight). Montana, New Mexico, US Military, Veterans Affairs, and Federal Prisons were over 1.5 yesterday (yellow highlight). This column is an early warning of increasing cases beyond day to day noise.

My calculated growth rate for USA is 0.0189 for yesterday, up from previous day of 0.0174. This is not population or case number weighted.
