I hear what you all are saying, but in reality the tranny doesn't know if it's pumping the fluid into a bucket or back into the tranny. The flow pressure is the same. I don't see how this so-called flush would dislodge debris that wouldn't be dislodged by normal operations.
So if the goal is to replace the fluid, the method called a "flush" is the most efficient way to R&R the fluid.
Am I missing something?

There are some differences which I guess we could debate the meaningfulness of:

D&R is simply removing the tranny plug, draining, and refilling. The car is turned off. Flush is removing the fluid send tube and allowing the tranny to pump out into a container. The car is running and you are shifting through the gears as you perform the flush. You do this iteratively, until the whole system is thoroughly cleaned.

Some people use a flush agent, which is really a solvent that further loosens up the gunk that may be in there. D&R doesn't do that. Really, with a flush you should never use that stuff, either.

Google this topic; you'll find that the same advice across the board, regardless of vehicle make or model. Acura even has TSBs out on this topic.
