850Turbo takes 1.5seconds longer to start than it 'should' ?

Post by phoenix_iii »

Finally getting my 1995 850 Turbo squared away. 120k on it, new trans.

I've put maybe 1500 miles on it since I've owned it. It had a cold idle problem, which was whole-heartedly remedied with a new Bosche TPS (thanks forum!).

Now, the only niggly issue I have left is that it takes an extra second to second and a half to start. It turns and crank well, but it just takes a bit longer than any other car I've owned. Starts up well, every time, just seems to take longer than any other car. When already warm, it is faster, for sure.

Now, I'm not like on it for 7 seconds or anything. It's really just 1 or 1.5 seconds over what I would consider 'normal'.

What should I be looking for?

I've gone through about 8 cars or so. mostly smaller japanese though recently. (2x crx 2x mr2), then my Monte Carlo SS (2000), 2002 Audi allroad, 2004 Honda Element, 85.5 Porsche 944...

It's not getting any worse.

Our '96 turbo takes about 3 seconds of cranking to start and I, too, sometimes stop turning the key just a bit too soon. I drive a Chevy Suburban every day so that is my comparison. The turbo seems to take a little bit longer than the Suburban to start. But since it always starts, runs great, and gets 20 mpg around town, I don't worry about it. Our Land Rover starts almost instantaneously, and the Odyssey is nearly instantaneous, but a touch slower than the Land Rover.

I have had about 30 different cars of all types and no longer go looking for projects. I already have a list that will last 30 or 40 more years! See my list of cars below, for example. And, that doesn't include the list my wife has developed, which does not include anything mechanical.

There is a delay on the spark to make sure fuel has been introduced to at least one cylinder.

True, Sony. If you're concerned, put your key in position II for a couple of seconds and then see if it starts instantly when you go to ignite. If so, this answers your question.
