Hi I've got a 1999 S80 2.5 I've been looking at what needs doing for my mot next year and on the last mot adviseres was mild play in control arms but not expensive so I'm looking into doing myself where's best to gets parts and is after market parts ok if so what ones if not wheres best to get gen Volvo parts at good price and as I'm gonna be working in that area was thing of doing drop arms at same time just to keep her looked after

Some say yes some say no on various aftermarket parts. I put uro brand arms on an S80 in 2016 and they are still fine today . If you have a 20 year old car maybe parts that last 2 or 3 years are good enough ?

Even if you love the car its still 21 years old and there are a whole host of things that could happen to it tomorrow that will send it straight to the junkyard. Even a minor accident will have your insurance company declare it totaled right?

Skip the gold plated parts unless you plan on keeping it forever and paying someone else for labor instead of doing it yourself for free.

for now keep driving it , when the arms get really bad the car is still driveable it just tends to switch lanes on its own , as long as you are paying attention its fine

If I recall the arms are steel and the bushings replaceable. If you have the ability press in new bushings and buy Lemforder - the price gap for just the bushings is not that bad.

I went with aftermarket control arms + ball joints and so far they have been holding up great.

Also I dont think other people cant decide if things are worth doing. It all depends on how you use your car imho. For me, the S80 is a daily driver, so it needs to be reliable and comfortable. Reliable (for me) means that I have to spend some money on it for (preventative) maintenance.

Thanks for your help how do you find the S80 as a daily drive I enjoy driving mine every day I've got the petrol 2.5 170bhp auto witch is more than enough power for me

It's very comfortable and I still like it very much. I think the clutch is on its way out, as I find the power delivery to be a little less direct than not too long ago.

According to the maximum MAF value, I should have something about 240bhp. The only issue I have is parking space, as parking spaces in the Netherlands tend to be a little bit on the small side hehe

For our US folks MOT is a legally required safety test,its not and option as to "just keep on driving" I recommend sticking with oem parts. i recently bought bushings and pressed them in myself.
1981 260 GLE converted to 240 M46 after auto box failure
1987 740t auto converted to M47
1997 V70t5 auto converted to M56
