Semiconductor is notorious for creating specs on the fly
I was shipping 100k lightsources to a large producer of microprocessors in the 90s, after we had installed a dozen , they came back to us with a spec they had invented based on collecting data from operation and wanted a warranty repair on a unit out of their spec. We politely declined. Luckily we had software that had to be reset by us every 60 days in case of accounts receivable going bad. Yes, we had done business with them before.
The best part was when ROHS and CE mark hit, and we had to alter the product to meet the standards, thereby upsetting “ copy exact”....they demanded a meeting to discuss. The only non conforming components in the system were....drum roll.....Intel components on boards.

The company I worked for had traditionally manufactured equipment to their own design for use in the services portion of the same company. There was a general depression in the industry, so my company tried to do some work for others. Lessons were learned.Chuck W wrote: ↑21 Oct 2020, 20:34Honestly, to me this sounds like whoever in your company bid said job was at fault. If the customer's requirements were unable to be met by your company, then it should've been declined. If the job required more precision at a higher cost, then that should've been taken into account.volvolugnut wrote: ↑21 Oct 2020, 17:06 Another time we were making simple welded and machined brackets (like alternator or compressor brackets). We made them as we normally would make similar parts for our own use. Most were rejected by the customer. In this case, the customer specifications were on the drawings but were much closer tolerance then we normally used. We stopped working for this company soon after. This is referred to as firing your customer.
I deal with designing/building test equipment machines and fixturing and sometimes I have specifications that are kind of tight tolerance-wise. I expect the vendor to be aware of their capabilities and price the bid accordingly.

Today I received the used hitch from Erie and attempted to install it on the ’04 XC90 but ran out of daylight. It’s not as easy as it looked in a video.

Wow, that doesn’t look very used. They’re usually fairly rusted from crappy factory paint and being under the back of the car.

I was so impressed. The pictures made clear that there was noticeable rust, and when it arrived, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it had been cleaned and painted.

I have only dealt with Erie 2 or 3 times. I found them honest and good to deal with. I would happily use them again.
Getting a nice surprise like the item arriving painted is just excellent.
Ont the quality of what was asked for v's what was made, I remember dealing with a well known US military equipment manufacturer about 25 years ago. We had to build parts under license for the UK military. They shipped us a metal casting that was machined to fine tolerances. They also sent us the drawing pack. Issue was the actual item and the drawings were not the same. We asked them did they want us to build to the drawing which made a useless part or did we build to the sample supplied!! Turns out their US supplier had found the same issue and had modified the part to work for the application but no one updated the drawings or notified the customer. There were several red faces needless to say!!
As to quality of building here in Canada I am at a loss to the very poor quality of many trades people. I'm convinced the framer of our new garage and his crew did not own a measuring tape between them. No 2 studs are the same spacing. Took my buddy and I 3 hours to figure out how we will drywall the garage and how many extra drywall backers we will have to install. As yet we have not found a drywall 'stretcher' that can make a 4' x 8' sheet 1-2" longer!! Just an extra note, I did not hire this clown, who could not read the drawings and built the walls 12" too short. Cost the contractor a lot of money to correct needing an Engineer report on how to fix legally!
Neil.

I'd be pissed... I really wonder how people like that continue to build things. I guess most people just have things built and ignore it, or simply don't know any better. Same idea with mechanics that do shoddy work. Then people who know what they're looking at get to it and their heads explode!scot850 wrote: ↑23 Oct 2020, 17:36 I have only dealt with Erie 2 or 3 times. I found them honest and good to deal with. I believe part of this issue is most people have no understanding of how things work or what good workmanship would look like. There is also the American tendency to avoid codes and inspections, which would discover and reject these faults before the workers get away.bmdubya1198 wrote: ↑23 Oct 2020, 18:04I'd be pissed... This is how my water closet was plumbed in. I found damp under the liner and wet underlay. I hope the floor joists haven’t been ruined. I can’t imagine why that union might be leaking
