stripped a screw - badly

Post by moncureww »

I stripped a screw on my 2006 s60 2.5T coil cover. I then tried to drill it out, and stripped it more. I wasn't too worried because it sits proud of the valve cover and it looked like I could get a grip around the edge of it. What sort of tool would you use to remove it so I can place the timing belt/coil cover back on?

Looks like you have enough room for the type of extractors in the link below. They work well if you have room to tap one on the head of the bolt.

Those look good and may work. It also looks like you might have room to get a vice-grip pliers on that head and slowly twist it. Try to squirt some PB Blaster on the threads and let it soak a bit first.

Put a propane flame on it for 28 seconds, then a vice grip and lock it hard to remove

I agree, but maybe 37 seconds after preheat.

Pipe wrench?
Use a dremel to make a cut so you can use a flathead screwdriver?

Vise grip type pliers are better than a pipe wrench. With the vise grips you have torque both directions. With a pipe wrench only in one direction without changing your grip. Also, the vise grip will usually work in a smaller space than a pipe wrench. My opinions.

Subtract the 28 seconds from the 37 seconds....add half the 9 seconds to the 27, round up.....heat for 32 seconds.

Serious question though.......do we want to just head the metal around the screw, for expansion and to break the bond on the threads?

It's less About thermal expansion and more about chemically breaking up the corrosion.
