Serpentine belt noise solved

Post by darrylrobert »

my serpentine belt was making a noise, sounded like a truck made a "whirring noise" loud when hot. Replaced my tensioner pulley and harmonic balancer but noise remained... genuine volvo belt wasnt that expensive so i decided to buy one, old one is still good but the noise it bugging me,apart from one nick (see pic)it looks fine no cracking etc.

New volvo belt and noise gone. Now i can hear the engine again and be alerted if something important is making a noise. Dont wait for the "check engine light" sometimes the check engine light comes on after you see flames coming from the bonnet, the car will usually give you an audible warning sign when things are about to fail.

I was sure it was a pulley making the noise and feared replacing them one by one, they all including the tensioner pulley turned quietly by hand

Is there a recommendation for serpentine belt replacement, like 50,000 miles

I recall looking fit this and not finding it. I reference 60k in this thread but I might have made that up

On edit...found it in service manual

Glad it was a simple fix.

Years ago I had the experience of seeing 6 different belts for the same car. Sorry to say it wasn't one of our Volvo cars. It were belts for a Saab.

The apparent range of quality was astounding.
