Odd gauge lamps not in use...can these be activated?

Post by SonicAdventure »

Pulled a 96 VDO N/A gauge cluster. Seeing there were three bulb locations without bulbs on the left-hand bank, I shined a flashlight through to reveal what was there.

The yellow low oil light is odd because there is a red oil symbol for this on the right-hand bank. Can this be activated by installing a bulb?

Below the yellow oil lamp, the yellow space is blank, but this seems to coincide with 70 series trunk/hatch open lights. Can this be activated by installing a bulb in an 850? Even if there are no letters or characters on the dash, a yellow light there would remind me the tailgate is open.

The red light looks like something exhaust related...on EU 70 series cars I think this area is reserved for the diesel glow plug lights. I have never seen this symbol discussed before. Is this something that can be mapped to a function on these cars in US markets that is deactivated for some reason but could be activated?

First one is exhaust temperature warning light. Only in Japan or Korea markets(?from my memory)

Second is as told.. Thats too only on certain markets. Relay 201 and gets signal from oil sensor which is normally closed when all is okay. I don't have more specific info of that yet.

To activate these you need some parts and wiring installed (i don't know if there is ready wiring) at least.

P.S. If someone wants use instrument for some own things there is example one pin output of speed for example if use for example alarm or remote to lock doors after speed is over x.. etc.

Right - bulbs alone will not do it, the circuit/function must be activated. Not simple.

Reminds me of the days that the dash had a single light for the indicators, the auto industry put the onus on the driver to know which side they had indicated.
