A guy I know changed the transmission fluid in his '98 S70 T5 with this red bottle Valvoline stuff. Should he expect issues?

They claim it is backwards compatible but when I changed out the transmission in my Suburban last year Chevy was pretty adamant that I not use Dex VI in the transfer case and to use only Dex III or the Goodwrench branded Dex III equivalent. There is no such thing as real Dex III anymore since GM quit certifying the specification. That tells me that it isn't 100% backwards compatible but I haven't heard of bad things happening.

I've been using it in my 98 V70 for over a year with no noticeable issues.

I've had no issues and have been using it for 3+ years and perform drain/fills about every 10K miles. I also reset the counter using DICE/VIDA when I do.

I use the Max Life synthetic ATF on all the vehicles I've owned that normally take Dex III. Never had an issue with it. The vehicle I owned with the most miles on this ATF is my '94 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 with the AW4 transmission. 358k miles on the original transmission, still shifts like it did when I purchased the vehicle in '97 with 40k on the clock....too bad the body hasn't held up to the road salt around here.

I also just changed the ATF out on my '96 850 last month with this fluid. It took 4 gallons of this stuff before the fluid was nice and bright red (I removed the trans cooler line and pumped the old stuff out 2.5 quarts at a time until clean fluid came out). The transmission instantly smoothed out (it was a little 'firm' on the 1-2 upshift). I put 3000 miles on it on a recent road trip and no issues so far. I did a quick drain and fill (about 1 quart) just to check the fluid condition and it was still bright red after 3k.

+1 on the Valvoline Max Life synthetic ATF. I use it on all our high-mileage stable, and the GLT in my signature line is coming on 270k miles, with 95K of it on MaxLife and no issues on the original transmission. I supplement with a drain and fill every 6 mos. It's cheap at Wally World in the gallon size, and location of the drain plug makes it convenient when under the car doing the current oil change.

Of note, I also use it in one the kids' cars, an '04 Sonata with 160k on the original transmission, also without issue, despite the warning of using non-oem fluids by the manufacturer.

Personally, I wouldn't mix two different fluids, rather buy enough to completely change it over, disconnect the battery and let the ECU "learn" the new paradigm, but I've had people smarter than me tell me both are unneeded.

Currently going through the long drain-and-fill procedure on my brother's V70 and I saw this yesterday at Walmart. I opted against it because I'm just doing drain and fills right now and don't want to mix synthetic with regular. (Is it really that bad to mix ATFs?) But I have heard great things about this ATF. Valvoline should put out a regular high mileage option. Only Supertech seems to do a DexIII regular high mileage ATF... I picked up some of that along with some of the regular blue bottle Valvoline stuff to continue the drain and fill process. The fluid is getting considerably cleaner.

The MaxLife is their high mileage formulation, with detergents and seal conditioners.
