For a few years now my 2004 V70 has been plagued by an intermittent driver side (L) windshield wiper noise when the blade reaches the top of its stroke. It doesn't happen all the time - maybe about 50% - and is more prevalent when the wipers are going at their fastest. It is quite a loud 'slap' and almost sounds like metal on metal - very aggravating. At first I thought the blade was traveling too far and hitting the edge of the windshield frame but I watched very carefully (while stopped) and that was not the case.
I found some tips on another forum and although I was suspect that they'd work I gave them a try. And to my surprise they actually did. I am a little frustrated in that I do not know why but I'll take the win. Given the 5.5" (not a typo!) of rain we had today I feel I've run them enough to declare victory. (I realize I just tempted fate!)
It's a little tough to describe but I'm hoping my efforts to post a picture will work. Basically the plane of the wiper arm needs to be parallel to the windshield glass. With the wiper in the full up position I fit an adjustable wrench to the arm about 14" up from the bottom and twisted it enough (not much for me) to get its plane the same as that of the windshield. This arm is only about 3/8" wide. A little tough to describe but I hope the picture makes it clearer. You can tell from the picture in my case the direction I was applying pressure. But you might have to go the other way to get things aligned. (I put tape on the arm but it's black so doesn't show up.)
Hope this helps someone!

A wiper arm tune-up! Gotta love it. Thanks for the "technique".
I read the tension spring in the arm ages, thus the blade isn't held against the glass as tightly compared to new. This can lead to chattering.
