07 XC70, are headlight lenses available? If not, can I remove for resealing?

Post by photoguy »

Morning.

Haven't been here for a while, cause I've been without a Swedemobile. Just picked up a 07 XC70 w/264,000 miles, one owner, and tons of receipts. Overall very good condition, just needs some servicing.

I can't seem to find headlight lenses, mine are wet and faded. I'm going to assume there was a change in design in 2005? If this is so, am I able to remove the original ones using the baking method, so I can clean and reseal?

Thank you!!!

We recently sealed our 08 C30 headlights with silicone and it eliminated the moisture on the interior of the lens. Had the car going on 3 years and didn't have a problem till recently. Removed the assembly and figure out where the water was entering the assembly. Cleaned with 99% alcohol and apply a thin bead of clear silicone. In our case we just ran a bead all the way around.

As for the fading I've tried all sort of methods on the various cars and none seem to last a year. Two weeks ago I tried the Meguiar's Clear Headlight Coating on the 03 Odyssey. I wet sanded with 320, 600, 800, 1000, 1200. Will use 1500 and 2000 on the C30 when I do the work on those assembly.

The Meguiars smell like paint used in auto body shops. Apply thin coats. Will take too long to dry and may leave orange peel if the coat is heavy. Excellent results for some real beat up lenses.

Thank you for the info. I would like to replace the lenses if possible, there seems to be replacements available prior to '05, nothing I can find for '05-'07. Wondering if there's something with the facelift that prevents the lenses from being removed.

I've done a few headlight restorations, the 3M kit works excellent for me. I did my Rover over two years ago, and still looks clear.

I have been using the 3M for about 4 years with mixed results. Mothers works well also. None last a long time.

You are right, the earlier lens are readily available. Entire 07 Assembly are also available but no lens. May have to heat it in the oven or use a heat gun. He makes it look easy. Not XC70 but should be about the same.

Really appreciate this, he does make it look easy. The link you provided for replacement lenses, do you know if they'll fit '07? I've seen these in my searches, meant for earlier models. Maybe I'll just purchase new assemblies...

Not sure where the differences are between the model years. The 07 assembly is not expensive if your car is in great shape and you plan on keeping it till it dies.

I would give the wet sanding a try first and coat with Meguiar's. The sealing with silicone is not difficult either. Just clean the nooks and crannies well with a tooth brush and then alcohol to further clean for better adhesion. A hair dryer can help with drying although if you use the 99% alcohol before sealing it does dry much faster.

I am always reluctant to change the headlight assembly as it can require attention in a few years. Just a little elbow grease and it's good for at least a year and with the Meguiar's, from the reviews I've read, it can last much longer while looking good the entire time. Wear some leather gloves if you intend to use a heat gun to open the assembly.

Appreciate the links, think I'll go with your suggestions and refurb, using the clear coating.

The left light is taking on water seriously, I'm confident I can find the leak and reseal. But, I'm assuming I'd have to remove the lens to clean any water spots left inside, I guess this is the tricky part. Suppose I could find a clean used assembly for the left, and refurb the right, not a bad idea.

Thanks!!

i have the same problem, one of my lights is fogging up when it rains. I have glass lenses, its actual glass not plastic glass. i intend removing the assembly and try topping up the seal with silicone without removing the glass. Ive read this does work to eliminate fogging, i have removed the glass on a spare assembly and it came apart but not easily.

here is a place that sells lenses, there is a post on this forum of someone saying they replaced the plastic lens with a glass one but because clear plastic is called glass its really hard to tell from a picture. the description says Volvo S60 (-2009), V70 (2000-2008), XC70 (2001-2007)

Unfortunately they don't ship to the U.S. I'm actually about to work on this issue shortly. I'm going to refinish the non-leaking lens, and hopefully find the leak from the other as you're planning. If this fails, I'll purchased a nice used one.

Hope you get yours worked out. Proper shiny lenses makes a significant difference.

Thank you!!

If the opening is large enough slip a small piece of Mr. Clean Magic Eraser inside and use a flexible pickup tool to clean the lens using soaping water. I don't believe the soapy water will hurt the reflectors. The eraser breaks up fairly easily so easier to remove. You don't or need to push hard to scrub.

The eraser is like fine grit sand paper but does not scratch. It will attached to the stuff needing removal and pull itself away from the pad along with the stuff needing removal from the surface. You'll see a slight cloudy water as the Eraser melts away along with the surface material being cleaned. I use it for everything and it's fast and no hard sc_rubbing.
