2010 S80 T6 water in passenger side - not sure it’s sunroof

Post by Jdawgvolvo »

Ok I’m in the middle of replacing my blower motor and upon carpet removal I have standing water. Hopefully another 2 hours snd I’ll have a working blower again....

There is not a lot of videos out there for the S80 regarding sunroof drains.

About 6 months ago I paid to have Volvo remove the passenger door and they repositioned the drain tube on the a pillar.

With the sunroof it’s hard to see where the drains go. Do I need to remove the headliner? Are their rear drains and do they follow the B pillar and where do they come out.

I do notice that the foam under the passenger dash is also damp. No water in the trunk/boot.

Anyone have tips on how to access the sunroof drains on this car?

Is there a chance it’s leaking from the windshield?

Smells funny you do not need to remove the door to fix the front drains just the A-pillar cover.

So I need to remove the rear seat to check the rear drain? I’m struggling to figure out where the water is coming from.

Huge thanks for the diagram. So remove headliner to check drains at sunroof?

If the drain system is like the P2 cars, (I would expect at least very similar) you can search for sunroof leaks in the P2 forum for information. Sometimes the hoses come apart or plug at the outside of the foot well near the door hinges. With carpet removed poke around in the corner and find the tubes. Any rubber tubing can be used for repairs. Another problem on the P2 was a leak from the outside air intake duct under the cowling.
Check the sunroof drains for trash with something like a weed eater line pushed in from the open sunroof. Check all four corners. Then get a small funnel and pour some water down the tube. It should run out on the ground, not in the foot well.

You do not need to remove the headliner unless the leak makes the headliner wet.

I can’t find the location of the tube on the passenger A pillar once it goes below the dash. It’s also not obvious where is comes out below as I can’t locate it in the cowl.

I see damp insulation near the A pillar passenger side so right now leading clue is it’s the right side sunroof drain. But it’s not simple to find it.

Sorry I can't help with the locations, but if you need a way to unclog them, I found very long zip ties to be ideal:

Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

Also -> Amazon link
. Click that when you go to buy something on Amazon and MVS gets a cut!

I’ve got a wire to use if/when I can find where it comes out. Not a lot of info on the P3 S80 compared the the XC60/90.

I did find that there is a push to get clogged sunroof drains part of a class action against Volvo as apparently this is a common issue.

I realised this whole thing when pulling the carpets to change out my blower motor. Scary with all the wiring passing through the passenger side to see water in there.

May have to just leave everything out after getting the blower going again and have the dealer fix it. If it does end up as class action I want record of it through Volvo.

Even the drain up by the roof is off it’s not a hole but a tube that connects to the rail the sunroof retracts on. I’ll post what I can so hopefully others with the S80 can see the solution.

So it looks like you found the solution? "the drain up by the roof is off". I recently went through all this with my 2007 S80 3.2, I was replacing parking brake cables on the driver's side and found lots of water under the carpet. After going through what you went through, chasing the drain tubing behind the dash etc., I found that it was my windshield. The top seal of the windshield was compromised, water would run over to the A-Pillar, run down the framework and find its way under the carpet soaking foam components along the way! And yes right by all kinds of wire harnessing (on pass. side).

If you think it could be the windshield, push on it at the top and if the seal is compromised it will move inward. Got it replaced and leaks are gone.

BTW I believe I found that the sunroof drain would exit somewhere between the front door and fender well, dripping out through a hole in the subframe underneath. You can see where the water drips out but I could never actually see the tube end.

Been tied up with work haven’t chased it down yet. My next move it to poor water along windshield and see if I can see water come in.

I would like to just tear out the insulation behind the glove box but ironically it’s on the the things keep the CEM and other items dry as it creates a barrier to the water.

Frustrating for sure. I’ll check the windshield as that’s definitely a possibility. Just wish I could see where that sunroof drain exits

That's exactly how I found my leak. I poured water into the sunroof drain and accidentally got water on the windshield. With the A-Pillar cover off and head liner pryed open a bit I saw water rolling along the glass edge towards A-Pillar from the windshield seam!

However I did not have water behind the glovebox. I was able to observed water drain out below car when I poured water directly into the sunroof drain. It drained between door and fender well under vehicle.

Good luck. BTW I bit the bullet and had a new windshield put in professionally for around $400. Ouch.
